Elon Track and Field Begins Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - The Elon track and field team began competition at the Duke Invitational today, April 8, at the Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University. The Phoenix competed in six different events with strong showings in each.
Veronica Day, the reigning Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Month, took second in the triple jump with a leap of 40'2". Lauren Hawkesworth and Janelle McNeil finished 10th and 16th in the same event with jumps of 36'11" and 38'2", respectively.
In the javelin, Justine Robertson threw for 128'3" for an eighth-place finish. The shot put rounded out the field events on the day for the Phoenix, where Robertson finished 13th after a heave of 40'8.25" and Charlise Morgan placed right behind in 14th with a throw of 41'5.75".
Julie Hart set a new personal and Elon-season best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:36.41, which places her second on the all-time list in the event. Hart's time placed her 15th out of the 41 runners in the field. Brennan McDavid (4:53.93) and Courtney Whalen (4:5.59) had strong showings in the 1,500-meter run developmental, finishing eighth and 11th out of 39 runners.
In the 5,000-meter run, Allyson Oram recorded the best time of the day for Elon clocking in at 17:55.11 for 13th in her section. Oram's time places her fourth on the all-time performance list in the 5,000-meter. Allyson Costa finished 11th in her section with a time of 18:14.66, while Morgan Denecke (18:18.30) Christine Pacewicz (18:27.13) came in 13th and 18th in the same group as Costa. Finishing with a time of 19:38.17 was Andrea Schultz, which earned her 14th in her section.
Veronica Luedke took 13th out of 33 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.23.
The Elon track and field team will conclude competition in the Duke Invitational tomorrow, April 9, with events beginning at 9 a.m.
Three Records Set by Elon Track and Field at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - Three new school records were set as the Elon track and field team completed action at the Duke Invitational. Records came in the 4x400-meter relay, 400-meter dash and 3,000-meter steeplechase, while a title also came in the 400-meter dash.
Amy Salek won the 400-meter dash with a record-setting time of 54.68, breaking her previous record of 55.16 set two years ago.
The 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Bria Bell, Veronica Luedke, Sarah Skogen and Salek, took third with a new record of 3:46.75, breaking the previous record set in 2009. Dana Cataldo, Kayleigh Birks, Veronica Day and Luedke made up the 4x100-meter relay team, which finished fifth with a time of 47.69.
Emily Tryon finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:51.85 for a new Elon record and seventh place. Emily Fournier took 10th in the same event with a personal best of 10:53.93.
In the 100-meter dash, Cataldo clocked a time of 12.51 in qualifying to put her into the finals in the eighth position. The junior finished seventh in the finals with a time of 12.52. Birks finished 14th in the event in 12.62, while Cara Hughes took 25th out of the 59 runners after crossing the finish line in 12.99.
Bell ran the 200-meter dash in 25.15 for eighth, while Birks (25.25) and Cataldo (25.53) finished close behind in 10th and 12th, respectively.
In the distance events, Julie Hart finished the 800-meter run in 2:13.15 for 20th. Her time is the third best time in the event for an Elon runner and a new personal best for the freshman. Brennan McDavid finished 29th in the 800-meter run developmental with a time of 2:24.24. Amanda Parker (10:54.43) and Kylie Womack (11:08.98) took 20th and 23rd in the 3,000-meter run.
Veronica Day earned third in the long jump with a leap of 18'5", while Brittany Wilkins took 14th a jump of 16'10.75". In the discus, Justine Robertson threw for a distance of 130'4" for 11th and Alyssa Girvin finished 18th with a throw of 119'. Jordan Lee jumped for 5'1" in the high jump to tie for 16th.
The Elon track and field team will compete next at the Kent Taylor - Joe Hill Carolina Invitational on Saturday, April 16, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Davidson Men's Track Distance Runners Shine at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - Charlie Schmitt, Ryan Hopkins and Demetrios Pagonis turned in a trio of times that rank among the top-10 fastest in Davidson men's track and field history in the 5000-meter run Friday at the Duke Invitational in Wallace Wade Stadium.
Freshman Andrew Lantz also made his mark on Davidson's record book, running the fourth-fastest 1500 meters in school history to place 15th in the event in three minutes, 53.02 seconds.
Schmitt, who broke the Davidson 5000m record on March 25 at the Raleigh Relays with a time of 14:27.21, placed 12th in 14:36.78 to lead the Wildcats in theevent. Hopkins trailed in 17th in 14:43.10 and was immediately followed by Pagonis in 18th in 14:49.25.
The 'Cats will return to action Saturday at both Duke and the JCSU Invitiational.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Will Mitchell and Ian Tupper were victorious in their respective events to lead the Davidson men's track and field team at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational Saturday.
Inclement weather hampered the meet resulted in the cancellation of the men's and women's 5000-meter, the 4x400-meter relay, and the men's 200-meter dash.
Mitchell won the 1500-meter run in 4:02.54 and was followed by teammate Jonathan Koch in4:04.89.
Tupper won the steeplechase in 9:36.47 and was followed by teammates Grayam Sailor-Tynes (third place, 9:44.49) and Vincent Weir (fourth place, 9:51.79).
JinHan Song led Davidson in the 400-meter dash in 49.30, which ranks as the 10th-fastest time in Davidson history.
Bryce Jones led Davidson in the 100-meter dash in 11.57 seconds and in the pole vault with a top mark of 12-11 1?2.
TaylorMartin completed the 400-meter hurdles in 56.37 seconds.
The meet was the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships April 22-23, hosted by Samford in Birmingham, Ala.
Katam Breaks His Own UNCG School Record at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - UNCG's Paul Katam continued his impressive outdoor season as he broke his own school record in the 5,000 meters that he set just weeks ago to lead UNCG on the first day of the Duke Invitational on Friday.
Katam finished in second place in the 5,000 meters after running a time of 8:20.76. That broke his school record he set at the Wake Forest Open by over five seconds.
Joey Thompson also had a nice day for UNCG as he completed the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:52.12, which was just over a second off his own school record he set as a freshman.
Jermaine Coore ran a nice race in the 5,000 meter section C race as he won the race with a 15:10.86.
On the women's side, Ashley Schnell finished in ninth place in the 1,500 meters and was just .28 seconds off her school record that she set earlier this season.
The Spartans will wrap up their stay at the Duke Invitational on Saturday as competition resumes at 9 a.m.
Pair of School Records Fall for UNCG at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - Chelsea Sumney captured the school record in the 3,000 meters and Anna Grimes set a new mark in the 2,000 meter steeplechase to lead UNCG on the final day of the Duke Invitational on Saturday.
Sumney's time of 10:05.65 broke former teammate Katie Hansen's school record she set last year at the Wake Forest Open by just over seven seconds.
Grimes also turned in a school record as she finished in third place in the 2,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 7:30.28. That time broke the previous record set in 2003 by Heidi Pinkerton by nearly 15 seconds.
Kelly Montague also ran a good race in the 2,000 meter steeplechase as she came in fifth place after running a 7:38.01. That time would've also beaten the previous school record.
The Spartans will return to action in two weeks as they compete at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. beginning on April 22.
Samford Women Dominate 5K In First Day Of Seminole Invite
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ---- The Samford women's track and field team closed out day one of the Florida State Seminole Invite Friday by dominating the 5,000-meter run. The Bulldogs claimed three of the top five spots in the event and posted two personal bests.
Jillian Klassen won the event, finishing almost 37 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack with a personal best time of 17:23.21. Ina Ables claimed fourth place with a time of 18:20.95 followed by Lillie Jackson in fifth place with a personal best of 18:28.19. Lauren Pilcher finished 11th with a time of 19:14.94.
In the women's high jump, Chenelle Terry tied for third place with a leap of 5-05.00 while Macy Conger took seventh place with a personal best of 5-03.00. Conger also finished 12th in the long jump with a mark of 17-02.75 followed by Ashley Cope in 13th place with a personal best of 17-02.00 and Emily Allen in 15th place with a personal best of 16-11.25.
Shelby Builta took third in the discus with a toss of 135-04 and fourth in the javelin with a mark of 129-06.
On the men's side, Brandon Bassett finished fourth in both the high jump and the javelin. He jumped a personal best of 6-06.75 and threw a personal best of 198-05. Donald Cooper finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6-04.75 followed by Tyler Kemp in sixth with a height of 6-02.75.
Thomas Oliver placed fifth in the javelin with a toss of 197-08 while Ryland Robbins (181-11) placed seventh and Kanon Burt (153-06) finished 10th.
Saturday's Seminole Invite events will start at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's hammer throw. At 1 p.m., the women's 100-meter hurdles will kick off the running events and the day will conclude at 5:35 and 5:40 p.m. with the women's and men's 4x400-meter relays, respectively.
Dan Hall will represent Samford at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday as well. He will run the 1500 meters.
Neal, Kirby, Seaman Lead Samford On Day Two Of Seminole Invite
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ---- The Samford track and field team rounded out the second day of competition at the Florida State Seminole Invite with three individual titles in women's track and men's field.
Kyle Kirby won the men's hammer throw with a mark of 183-10 while Chris Davis (127-06) took ninth and Thomas Oliver (123-02) took tenth place.
Michael Seaman claimed the top spot in the pole vault with a height of 16-06.75 followed by Patrick Wells in second with a height of 16-06.75. Owen Wagoner tied for fifth with a vault of 15-07.00, and Brandon Bassett finished 10th with a mark of 14-07.25.
Hillary Neal won the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:11.03 while Holly Benson finished sixth with a time of 2:15.91.
Also in the women's running events, Morgan Tyler finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.40. Leslie Graf followed in seventh place with a personal best of 1:04.22, and Danielle Blanco placed eighth with a time of 1:04.31. Julie McDonald placed 13th with a personal best of 1:07.13.
McDonald also placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 14.16 followed by Ashley Cope in 12th place with a personal best of 14.731 and Macy Conger in 13th place with a personal best of 14.735.
Madeline Cross (26.25), Tatum Moffett (26.35) and Jessica Watson (26.69) finished 25th, 26th and 29th, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Moffett also placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.64.
Cross, Moffett, McDonald and Graf also led Samford to a fifth place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.81.
In the 1500 meters, Lauren D'Alessio placed third with a personal best of 4:34.40. Jessica Van Ausdall finished ninth with a time of 4:50.45 and Alli Keithan finished 11th with a personal best of 4:56.72.
Deanna Zidar took fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:32.18 followed by Rachel Sims (7:37.43) in seventh place and Lauren Ewart (7:41.81) in eighth place.
In the men's running events, Cavan Corcoran finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best of 14.73 while Bassett (15.76) finished 10th and Donald Cooper (16.93) took 11th place.
Cooper also finished 12th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.81 while Corcoran finished 14th with a time of 56.40.
Connor McGee placed 31st in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.14 followed by Brad Bostic in 38th with a time of 23.54.
In the 100-meter dash, Justin Emerson placed 14th with a time of 10.897 while McGee (11.45) placed 28th and Bobby Ellison (11.68) placed 31st. Alex Richter placed 12th in the 400-meter dash with a personal best of 49.181 while Brad Bostic took 27th place with a time of 51.84.
Blaise Carie led the Samford men in the 1500 meters. Carie finished 10th with a personal best of 3.54.29 followed by Scott Cope (3:55.52) in 11th, Ramsey White (4:05.54) in 12th and James Graham in 13th with a personal best of 4:09.70.
In the other field events, Chris Davis placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 46-08.75 followed by Kanon Burt in seventh place with a toss of 42.11.75.
Morgan Tyler placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-03.00 while Emily Allen finished eighth with a personal best of 38-01.50.
Laura Bedsole took sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75 followed by Mary Barron (10-11.75) in seventh, Ashley Cope (10-06.00) in eighth, and Rachel Gregory (10-00.00) in ninth.
Senior Dan Hall also represented Samford at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday. Hall took 49th place in the 1500 meters with time of 4:54.52.
The Bulldogs have one more week before they host the 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships at the brand new Samford Track and Soccer Complex, Friday and Saturday, April 22-23. Samford does not have meets scheduled until then.
PALADIN TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS WIN NINE EVENTS AT
13TH ANNUAL FURMAN INVITATIONAL
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman turned in first-place finishes in eight individual events and one relay at the 13th annual Furman Invitational Track Meet, held Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C. Macklin Caffe won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, recording a time of 4:03.37 to come in just shy of the sub-four minute mile mark.
Junior Erin Barker won the 800m (2:18.83) and the 1500m (4:41.71) with personal-best times to lead the Furman women's team. Junior Chloe Kowalski won the 5,000m with a time of 18:23.0, and sophomore Misha Holmes tallied a personal-best time of 15.14 to win the 100m hurdles event. The Paladin 4x400m relay team of senior Monique Ositelu, senior Jenna Callahan, Holmes, and freshman Alexa Wilton posted a time of 4:08.60 for first place.
Sophomore Wilkerson Given placed first with personal-best times in both the 800m (1:55.39) and 1500m (3:53.61) to pace the Paladin men. Senior Charlie McGoogan turned in a first-place time of 15:13.52 in the 5,000m, and junior Brian Toney won the javelin with a throw of 47.50.
Several meet records were set at the event. Eric Chapman of USC Upstate set a new record with a throw of 165'1" in the hammer competition, and Ben Wheeler, also of USC Upstate, established a new meet record with a time of 14.61 in the 110m hurdles.
In the high school boys events, Carolina's Shacorey Jeter tied his own record of 10.99 in the 100m, and Adrian Caron of Walhalla set a new record at 50.25 in the 400m. Wade Hampton's 4x800m relay team established a meet record after recording a time of 8:14.41. In the field events, Broome's Jimel Feaster tied the meet record with a mark of 6'4". In the high school girl's events, Tiffany Siks of Easley set a new meet record with a distance of 40'1/2" in the shot put competition.

Georgia SouthernTrack and Field Records Seven Personal Bests
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Members of the Georgia Southern Track and Field team recorded seven total personal bests and had 15 top-10 finishes at the Seminole Invite this weekend. In addition to individual successes, the Eagles' 4X400 Relay team ran a 3:50.66, the lowest time posted since April 2009. The squad of Kristiana Towns, Morgan Jefferson, Asea Mayfield and Ray Toomer took second place in the meet with that time. The 4X100 Relay team was fourth overall, adding another top-10 finish to Georgia Southern's tally.
The Georgia Southern sprinters posted outstanding times at Florida State's Mike Long Track. Toomer, who ran the anchor leg of the 4X400 Relay, launched herself into the top five in Georgia Southern history with her personal best time of 63.19 in the 400 meter Hurdles. Her performance should rank in the top three of the Southern Conference times for the 2011 outdoor season.
Sophomore Jasmine Billings ran her personal best in the 100 meter Hurdles with a 14.05 for fourth place. Freshman Kwajelin Holsendolph finished just behind Billings in fifth with a time of 14.12. Freshman Stephanie Hicks posted her personal best time (14.41) and finished eighth in that event.
One of the members of the 4X400 Relay squad, Jefferson placed fifth in the 400 meter Dash earlier in the day with a 58.14 time. Her time established a 2011 season outdoor best for Georgia Southern as well as a personal best for the junior. Her time this weekend should place her among the top 10 in the Southern Conference rankings. Towns took eighth place in the 400 meter Dash, just .25 seconds off her personal best time.
In the 100 and 200 meter Dash events, Ebony Carter placed in the top 10 among collegiate competitors in both events. Carter ran a 24.99 in the 200 meter race and a 12.03 for in the highly competitive 100 meter Dash where Carter's time was separated from the sixth-place finisher by only.05 seconds.
The theme of top-10 finishes and personal bests started with the field events.
Junior Millicent Brooks-Millender added two top-10 finishes for the Eagles with her marks in the Triple Jump and Long Jump. Brooks-Millender captured fourth in the Triple Jump with a personal best distance of 39'04". She placed sixth behind teammate Shaunta Hamilton in the Long Jump. Hamilton recorded a distance of 18'7.25" on her initial attempt for fifth place in the event.
Adding more than four feet to her previous personal best, Azura Robillard move up the Southern Conference chart in the javelin. Robillard placed sixth at the meet with a throw of 108'8".
In the throws, Charnelle Wray took sixth place in the Shot Put with her best throw of her career (37'5.25"). She took eighth in the Hammer Throw with a personal best of 116'6". Hicks, competing in the Shot Put for the first time during outdoor season, earned ninth-place with a distance of 35'11.5".
Terriers Tune Up For SoCon Championship Meet with Duke Invitatiaonl
DURHAM, N.C. -- Chase West broke a 12-year Wofford school record in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.85 at the Duke Invitational over the weekend to pace the men's and women's track and field teams.
West broke the school record by over two seconds with his time in the event.
Also on the men's side, Trey Parker ran a 9:37.68 in the 3,000m steeplechase setting a new school record.
Mike McCrimon finished in 14th in the triple jump with a distance of 13.66m.
On the women's side, Alyssa Burket finished in first place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:46.16 setting a Wofford record. Carolina Burdette finished in 18th with a 5:03.97.
In the 800m, Katie Kessler finished 5th with a time of 2:18.29, while Burket took 13th with a time of 2:19.43.
Carly Egan finished in 20th in the 5,000m run with a time of 18:41.25.
The Terriers will return to the track on April 22 for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship Meet.
The Citadel Finishes Strong at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. - The Citadel captured a pair of first places finishes and also set a school record, as the track and field teams concluded the final day of the Duke Invitational on Saturday, April 9.
Sophomore Brunson Miller sprinted across the finish line for first place in the 400m dash after posting a time of 47.48, which is his fastest non-adjusted time. Miller's victory marked the first time since Eric McClary won the men's high jump in 2000 that a Bulldog won an event at the Duke Invitational. Miller also competed in the 200m dash, and with a time of 21.79 he finished in fourth place and tied for the No. 9 spot on The Citadel's all-time list.
Micah Wessinger, also a sophomore, landed herself atop The Citadel's all-time list as she set a new school record in the 800m. Her time of 2:12.10 gave her a 12th place finish out of 39 competitors. Freshman Danielle McKee competed in the developmental portion of the event and came in 19th place out of 66 with a time of 2:21.61.
On the men's side, sophomore Jordan Ashley recorded a personal-best time en route to winning the 800m developmental section after posting a time of 1:56.03. Sophomore John Gatewood participated in the 800m open section and also logged a personal-best with a time of 1:56.21.
