Kelsey Sharkey Selected as Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Kelsey Sharkey, a sophomore women's basketball player at Appalachian State, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for March 9, the league office announced today.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native holds a 3.68 GPA in electronic media broadcasting.

Sophomore forward Kelsey Sharkey posted three standouts performances over the past week at the 2011 SoCon Basketball Tournament. In Appalachian's 10-point quarterfinal victory over Davidson, Sharkey had a game-high eight rebounds, to go along with eight points and tied a career high with six assists.  In the game semifinal win over Elon, Sharkey grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, tied her career best with 12 points and reset her career high in assists, dishing out seven. In the championship game against Samford, Sharkey was yet again active on both the offensive and defensive fronts, as she hauled in nine rebounds, recorded 10 points and totaled two assists and two steals. She was named first-team all-Southern Conference Tournament.

The Mountaineers will wait to hear the postseason fate early next week.

Other nominees included Samford women's basketball player Paige Anderson, Chattanooga women's tennis player Jenna Nurik and Western Carolina softball player Katie King.
