College of Charleston 6, Florida Atlantic 1
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team took down Florida Atlantic, 6-1, in non-conference action at Patch Reef Park on Monday afternoon.
CofC improves to 3-4 on the season while Florida Atlantic falls to 2-9.
"Today we had some of our players play the best tennis they have all season which is a good sign as we prepare to move into our Southern Conference schedule," said head coach Angelo Anastopoulo. "We played well in some very warm conditions which is a testament to the players' conditioning and preparation."
The Cougars opened the match with the doubles point for the third consecutive match.
The top tandem, Casey Kinsey and Katie Lee, took down FAU's Natasha Basma and Erika Mrazkova in a hard-fought, 8-6 match. Sisters Caroline Newman and Christin Newman ensured the doubles point with an 8-4 result over Cassie Bergeson and Marlene Ryan. Irene Viana and Olivia McMillan claimed victory in the No. 3 spot with a 7-5 tiebreaker over Natasha Phillips and Justine Humair.
The Cougars extended the lead to 3-0 when Christin Newman defeated Humair, 6-1, 6-4, and Carolina Newman downed Ryan, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Casey ensured the victory for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-3 finish over Basma.
Kelly Kambourelis was the first player done and went 6-0, 6-1 over Bergeson.
Keely Mulligan defeated Virginia Augustin, 6-3, 6-1, for the Cougars' fifth match.
Phillips notched the lone point for FAU with a narrow defeat of Viana, 6-2, 4-6 (10-5).
UNCG 6, UNC Asheville 1
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNCG continued its strong play this spring as the Spartans easily handled UNC Asheville, 6-1, on Monday afternoon at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center.
The Spartans are now 5-2 to start the spring season with their only losses coming to No. 5 North Carolina and No. 68 Virginia Tech.
Alex Whitehead and Annette Rios teamed up for an easy 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to start the match and Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty sealed the doubles point for UNCG with their 8-3 win at No. 1. The No. 3 team of Devon Sutherland and Dilara Yurtkuran made it a clean sweep for UNCG in doubles with their 8-6 win.
The Spartans immediately stretched its lead to 2-0 as Devon Sutherland received a default win at No. 6 singles because the Bulldogs (5-5) were short a player with Devon Cavanaugh out with an injury.
Whitehead quickly made it 3-0 in favor of the Spartans as she defeated Stephanie Schon 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Wilkins improved her record to 6-1 this spring at No. 1 singles by winning 6-3, 6-1 over Britney Cloer.
Rios kept things rolling for the Spartans with her 6-3, 6-1 win against Jackie McGuirk at No. 5 singles. Dougherty pushed the Spartan lead to 6-0 as she won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Zoe Hamel avoided the sweep for the Bulldogs as she scored a narrow 7-5, 5-6, 1-0 (5) win at No. 3 singles against Yurtkuran.
The Spartans will wrap up their three-match road swing on Wednesday as they travel to Longwood for a 2 p.m. contest.
