CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Andrew Goudelock scored 31 points and College of Charleston overcame an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Furman, 63-58, in the second semifinal of the 2011 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship at the McKenzie Arena.
The Cougars (24-9) will face defending tournament champion Wofford Monday evening at 9 p.m. with a bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The game will be carried live by ESPN2.
Trailing 40-29 with 11 minutes remaining, Charleston held Furman without a field goal for nearly eight minutes while going on an 18-3 run to take the lead for good.
Goudelock struggled from the floor, connecting on only 8-of-28 attempts, but the SoCon Player of the Year hit 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Freshman Trent Wiedeman notched his second double-double in as many nights with 10 points and 12 boards.
Seniors Jordan Miller and Amu Saaka led Furman with 11 and 10 points, respectively. It was Miller's third straight double-digit effort in the tournament.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Noah States and Saaka gave Furman (22-10) its first 11-point lead at the 15:57 mark of the second half, and although the Paladins stretched the lead to 11 twice more, they could never get any further.
The game featured eight ties and nine lead changes.
College of Charleston will play in its fifth SoCon championship game since joining the conference in the 1998-99 season. The Cougars are 1-3 in those games. Furman was denied its bid to win its first league title since 1980.
