SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Midway through the 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field season, Western Carolina leads the men's power rankings, while Appalachian State is first on the women's side. The rankings are determined by the top eight times or marks that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at the conference championships in April.
The Catamount men, who finished second in last season's championship, tallied 211 points to take first place in the rankings. Appalachian State, the defending champion, finished just behind Western Carolina in the power rankings with 210 points, while Samford rounds out the top three with 175 points.
The women's indoor champion Mountaineers registered 179 points to claim the top spot. Elon followed in second place with 129 points. Trailing the Phoenix by two points, Western Carolina came in at third. The Catamounts won the 2010 championship.
The 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held April 22-23 in Birmingham, Ala.
