SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Davidson junior Ryan Hopkins has been named Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while Appalachian State senior Malcolm Styers was named the SoCon Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for their performances for all meets, March 25-27. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Hopkins, a junior from Greenwich, Conn., placed fourth in the 10,000m run at the Raleigh Relays over the weekend. His time of 30:14.87 set the Davidson school record and was the fastest time so far this season in the SoCon.
Styers, a senior at Appalachian State, competed in both the discus and hammer throw events this past weekend at the Raleigh Relays. The Newton, N.C., native's distance of 158'3" in the discus leads the conference while Styers toss of 193'9" in the hammer throw places him second in the SoCon.
Other top performers this week included:
Appalachian State junior Sean Soderman - Ran a conference-leading mark in the 5000m with a time of 14:22:16.
Wofford junior Mavrick Harris - Placed first in the 10,000m at the Asics Winthrop Invitational with a time of 32:45.40.
Samford freshman Owen Wagoner - Jumped a personal-best 16'2.75" in the pole vault to place him second in the conference.
