LINVILLE, N.C. - The Furman women's tennis team defeated Appalachian State, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Grandfather Mountain Country Club in Linville, N.C., to improve to 8-8 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Southern Conference. The match was moved indoors in Linville due to inclement weather in the Boone area.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to open the match, winning the doubles point. Sophomore Lauren Kline and freshman Amanda Murray combined for an 8-7(7-4) victory over Ellie Linsell and Blakeley Bean at number one doubles, while freshman Margaret Boyette and sophomore Michele Stanford teamed up for an 8-5 win over Gisela Fernandez and Jessica Thaggard in the second doubles match. At number three doubles, seniors Monica Arguello and Jennifer Betts defeated Jennifer Ansari and Kim-Lea Dinh, 8-2.
Furman won five out of six singles matches for the team victory. Arguello, ranked 71st nationally, defeated Linsell, 6-3, 6-2, at number one singles, and Kline beat Ansari, 6-1, 6-1, in the second singles match. Boyette posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Thaggard at number three singles, while Murray defeated Beatn, 6-4, 6-0, in the fourth singles match-up. Stanford notched a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Amanda Cash at number five singles. The Mountaineers picked up their lone point in the sixth singles contest, where Dinh defeated sophomore Olivia Maurice, 6-2, 6-1.
Charlotte 4, Davidson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers took three of the six singles matches on its way to a 4-0 short-match win over cross-county rival Davidson on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in women's tennis action in the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.
It was the Wildcats (4-14) eighth straight defeat as they closed out their four-match homestand. Davidson and Charlotte were meeting for the 25th time, with the 49ers (9-11) winning their ninth match in the all-time series. The two schools have now altered wins in the last four years.
The No. 2 doubles of Romina Clemente and Katharine Dicconson were the lone 'Cats to score a win on the afternoon. The duo improved to 2-1 as a team, earning an 8-5 win over Tiffany Vanhpraseuth and Emmanuelle Briant.
Charlotte though captured wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles spots for an early 1-0 lead. The 49ers then scored wins at the top-three singles positions for the win as the other three singles matches went unfinished.
Brites Moniz-Soares nearly forced a third set in her match when she played to a tie-breaker in the second set vs. Andrea Rivera at No. 2 singles. She fell in the tie-breaker allowing the 49ers to clinch the match.
Davidson starts a four-match road swing with a SoCon match at UNCG on Apr. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
Chattanooga 7, Tennessee Wesleyan 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team posted a 7-0 shutout of Tennessee Wesleyan this afternoon. The Lady Mocs surrendered just 13 games while improving their record to 8-7 overall. TWC dropped to 2-8 on the year.
Rain in the Chattanooga area forced the match to the indoor courts at the UTC Tennis Center. The two teams began with singles matches with three Lady Mocs shutting out their opponents. Juniors Shaina Singh and Charlotte Bossy and freshman Diana Zora swept the bottom three matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Singh won her fourth match in a row, improving to 14-11 overall and 9-6 at No. 4. Bossy improved to 6-3 in the No. 5 position while Zora moved to 6-7 overall.
Sophomore Jenna Nurik defeated Beatriz Signori (6-1, 6-0) at No. 1 to up her record to 14-11 overall. Freshman Alexa Flynn beat Zola Enkhbat (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2 to improve to a team-leading 15-8. Junior Emily Hangstefer snapped a two-match slide with her (6-1, 6-0) win at No. 3.
UTC also squeezed in two doubles wins after singles play. Nurik and Singh won by forfeit at No. 3. Flynn and Hangstefer ended their two-match losing streak with an 8-5 win over Signori and Enhkbat at No. 1. Bossy and Zora rounded out the afternoon with their 8-4 win at No. 2.
The Lady Mocs hit the road this weekend for matches at Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston. UTC faces the Eagles on Saturday, April 2, at 1:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) and visits the Cougars at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.
