SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern freshman Kwajelin Holsendolph and College of Charleston freshman Dena O'Brien have been named Southern Conference Women's Co-Outdoor Track Athletes of the Week while Elon senior Veronica Day was named the SoCon Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for their performances for all meets, March 25-27. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Holsendolph, from Hinesville, Ga., set personal records in the 100m Hurdles and the 100m Dash at the UCF Invitational last weekend. Her time of 14.06 in the 100m Hurdles placed her in the top five in the Georgia Southern record book in that event. In the 100m Dash, she ran a 12.19, which ranks her in the top five of the Eagles' times this season. Holsendolph also anchored the 4x100m and the 4x400m Relays for the Eagles this weekend.
O'Brien, a freshman from Pelham, Ala., set the College of Charleston record in the 5000m run with a time of 16:21.35 at the Raleigh Relays. The mark was a personal-best for O'Brien by 25 seconds, and it ranks her sixth in the East Region and 12th nationally in the event.
Day, a senior at Elon, finished third at the Raleigh Relays in the long jump with a distance of 19'2.75". The Vienna, Va., native also recorded a mark of 40'4.25" in the triple jump, which placed her second in the event. Her triple jump distance set the Elon school record, and both her marks on the weekend rank her first in the conference.
Other top performers this week included:
Samford sophomore Lauren D'Alessio -At the Alabama Relays, finished third with a mark of 2:15.28 in the 800m and doubled back for a second place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 4:38.30.
Western Carolina junior Felisha Garren - Recorded a SoCon leading time of 24.54 in the 200m dash at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.
Appalachian State sophomore Gayshawna Watkins - Threw a personal-best 46'6.75" in the shot put at the Raleigh Relays.
Samford sophomore Shelby Builta - Set a school record in the discus with a toss of 144'1" at the Alabama Relays. Also threw 129'4" in the javelin and 136'5" in the hammer.
Western Carolina freshman Megan Morton - Won the javelin at the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic with a toss of 131'3".
