Carothers, Hyter Named Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina senior Jane't Carothers has been named Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week while Georgia Southern senior Lynndsey Hyter was named the SoCon Women's Indoor Field Athletes of the Week for their performances at the SoCon Track and Field Indoor Championship, Feb. 26-27.  The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

Carothers, a native, was honored at the Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the SoCon Championship after placing first in the 400m dash and being part of the winning 4x400m relay team for Western Carolina, and finishing second in the 200m dash.  Carothers' time of 55.34 in the 400m gave the senior her third consecutive victory in the event.  In the 4x400m relay, Carothers ran anchor on the team that secured the race for the Catamounts for the fifth straight year.  While trying to defend her 200m title, Carothers fell just short with a time of 24.59, which was 0.11 seconds behind the winner.  The Catamounts finished second overall in the 2011 championship.

Hyter, a senior at Georgia Southern, was awarded as not only the Most Outstanding Field Athlete at this year's competition but she was named the overall Most Outstanding Athlete.  The Dallas, Texas native took first place in the pentathlon and long jump, while placing second in the triple jump and fourth in the 60m hurdles.  Hyter became the first three-time winner of the heptathlon event with a total of 3,578 points.  In long jump, Hyter posted a distance of 6.06m, edging out defending champion Veronica Day of Elon.  In the triple jump, Hyter recorded a leap of 12.20m, which was just 0.04m shy of the lead mark.
