CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Citadel snapped a nine-match losing streak when the tennis team blanked Johnson C. Smith University, 7-0, in non-conference tennis action on Monday, March 28.

The Bulldogs (2-16) earned the shutout in doubles action, after limiting the Golden Bulls (3-14) to just three games on all three courts. The Bulldog tandem of Derek Dickey and David Orces combined to defeat McKenzie Bean and Robret Butts at the No. 1 position, 8-3. On court two and three the Cadets gave JCSU no chance and swept each game of their respective doubles match. At the No. 2 position, The Citadel freshmen duo of James Atkinson and Dillon Berkabile dominated Dion Chever and Jamil Jones, 8-0, while Josh Cook and Jeremiah Dye accomplished the same feat at the No. 3 spot over JCSU's Barren Smith and Jerald Stuckey.

The Citadel also cruised through in singles play, winning in straight sets at five of the six singles positions. Three Bulldogs only needed 12 games to dispatch their opponents. Atkinson picked up his second consecutive win over Smith at the No. 4 position, while Cook beat Dion Chever at No. 5 and Elliott Sperr earned his first victory of the season at No. 6 against Stuckey, each by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

Orces topped JCSU's Butts, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 1 position, while Berkabile downed Golden Bull Jamil Jones, 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, Dickey won the first set, 6-3, but JCSU's Bean forced the match into a third-set super-tiebreaker after winning the second set by the same score. In a tight battle Dickey triumphed, 13-11.

The Citadel will face Lenoir-Rhyne Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
