SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Furman's Monica Arguello has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 21-27. Arguello went 6-0 in both singles and doubles competition last week as the Paladins earned league wins over Wofford (7-0), Samford (4-3) and Chattanooga (6-1). It is the second time this season the senior has earned the award. The Player of the Week selections are made by the conference office.
Arguello improved to 11-4 (4-0 SoCon) at No. 1 singles for the Paladins with three straight-set wins last week. She began the week with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wofford's Emilia Milovanovic. Arguello then defeated Samford's Taylor Morgan, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), before earning a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik.
Ranked 86th nationally in singles, Arguello teamed with Jennifer Betts at the No. 3 doubles position for Furman last week. The Furman tandem blanked Wofford's Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan, 8-0. Arguello and Betts then held off Samford's Madelie Janse van Rensburg and Jessica Diamond, 9-7, and topped UTC's Charlotte Bossy and Diana Zora, 8-2. Arguello and Betts are now 6-4 in doubles play this spring.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Elon's Briana Berne, UNCG's Niltooli Wilkins, Samford's Andrie Meiring, and Western Carolina's Carolina Lainez.
