CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- A final round 299 gained the Elon Phoenix women's golf team one spot in the final standings of the UC Spring Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon. Elon posted a three-round score of 909 (301-309-299) to finish sixth, just two stokes back of fourth, in the 22-team field.

The Phoenix was led by Martyna Mierzwa who ended the tournament tied for 12th among the 121 individuals competing. Mierzwa notched a three-day score of 224 (76-72-76). Tara McFadden was just two strokes back in a tie for 16th with a mark of 226 (76-76-74).

Shannon Prunty fired a 74 on Sunday on her way to a 26th-place tie with a three-round score of 230 (73-83-74). Virginia Mayer's mark of 232 (76-81-75) placed her in a tie for 39th while Lauren Lebak tied for 79th after posting a 242 (78-80-84) after her three rounds.

North Texas improved on its score in each of its three rounds on its way to claiming the team title with a three-round score of 882 (301-292-289). The Mean Green bested Morehead State (290-301-304--895) by 13 strokes. In third place was Florida Southern (295-302-300--897) while Campbell (300-302-305--907) finished fourth and Stetson (303-296-309--908) was fifth.

Florida Gulf Coast's Briana Carlson (74-70-67--211) took home the individual title.

The Phoenix will next compete at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic on April 4-5 in Wilmington, N.C.

UNCG takes 14th at the Bryan National Collegiate

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - Managing challenging conditions that inflated scores across the board, the UNCG women's golf team finished 14th in the 17-team Bryan National Collegiate on Sunday. Lizzie Bundy's 79 was the Spartans' low score of the day, but the team's standing was among its best in the 14-year history of the nationally prestigious event.

UNCG defeated NC State, UNC Wilmington and the College of Charleston, all of which were ranked ahead of the Spartans in the most recent golfstat.com ratings, over the 54-hole, three-day tournament at Bryan Park's Champions Course. It's the third time the Spartans have surpassed three or more teams in the Bryan, which the university co-hosts with Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons won the title by two strokes over Tennessee, which was led by medalist Erica Popson. In all, 13 of the 17 teams were ranked in the top 50, and they endured record cold in the final round. During play, the temperature topped out at 37 degrees. The previous cold standard at the event was a 44-degree day in 2008.

Ana Lucia Martinez had UNCG's top individual finish at the tournament, tying for 28th with a three-day total of 231 (77-74-80).

Before this year, UNCG's best efforts in this tourney came in 2008, when the team took 15th among 18 participants, and 2000, when it was 10th in a 15-team field.

UNCG will return to action April 4-5 at the Lady Seahawk Invite hosted by UNC Wilmington at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, N.C.

COUGARS CONCLUDE TOURNAMENT PLAY AT BRYAN INTERCOLLEGIATE

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team finished 17th on the final day of tournament play at the 2011 Bryan National Intercollegiate held Sunday afternoon at the Champions Course at Bryan Park.

Sophomore Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) was the Cougars' top finisher carding a three-round score of 240 (+24) for a tied for 60th finish. She shot the lowest CofC round with a five-over par 77 on Friday.

No. 15-ranked Wake Forest won the team tournament title by a mere two strokes (+31) over No. 14 Tennessee (+33). Of the approximately 30 tournaments completed this spring, only three have had more top 50 squads than the Bryan Intercollegiate's elite field of 13 ranked programs.

CofC will close out the regular-season portion of its schedule by playing host to the Pinehurst Challenge on April 4-5 at the Pinehurst No. 6 Course in Pinehurst, N.C., prior to the Southern Conference Championship to be held on April 17-19 at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
