CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- Shannon Prunty's first-round 73 helped lead the Elon Phoenix women's golf team to a tie for fourth place after the first round of the UC Spring Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati on Friday.

The Phoenix posted a team score of 301 and is just one stroke back of Campbell for third place in the 22-team field.

Three Elon players all carded first-round marks of 76 - Tara McFadden, Martyna Mierzwa and Virginia Mayer. The trio is tied for 22nd among the 121 individuals competing.

Rounding out the entrants for Elon is Lauren Lebak who posted a 78 on Friday and is tied for 48th.

Paige Lausier's 69 helped lead Morehead State to the top of the team leaderboard. Lausier holds the individual lead after one round. Morehead State shot a 290 on Friday.

Florida Southern (295) sits second while North Texas (301) is tied with Elon for fourth.

Round two will be played at the Plantation Golf Resort on Saturday.

UNCG tied for 14th after Bryan National Collegiate's first day

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - Senior Erica Creed's 3-over-par 75 on Friday led UNCG to a 14th-place tie after the first day of play at the 17-team Bryan National Collegiate, a prestigious event it co-hosts with Wake Forest at the Champions Course at Bryan Park.

The Spartans are seeking to meet or exceed their previous best in the tournament, achieved when they claimed 10th out of 15 teams in 2000. The championship, which has attracted 13 of the nation's top 50 teams, is in its 14th year. Only three other comprehensive tournaments this spring among the 30 conducted nationwide have had more current top-50 teams than the Bryan's total.

UNCG's other performances on Friday came from Ana Lucia Martinez (77), Begona Sarabia (78), Lizzie Bundy (81) and Courtney Taylor (82). The Spartans are even with NC State and UNC Wilmington at 311. That's 10 shots clear of the College of Charleston.

Play resumes at 8:30 Saturday morning by shotgun start.

BOEHM PACES COUGARS AFTER FIRST ROUND AT BRYAN INTERCOLLEGIATE

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - Sophomore Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) paces the College of Charleston women's golf team with a five-over par 77 after the first round of tournament play at the 2011 Bryan National Intercollegiate held Friday at the Champions Course at Bryan Park.

Boehm made three of the team's nine first-round birdies on Holes No. 1, No. 3 and No. 10 and is currently tied for 42nd in a tough tournament field featuring 13 top 50-ranked programs in No. 4 Duke, No. 7 Virginia, No. 15 Michigan State, No. 16 Tennessee, No. 17 and host Wake Forest, No. 21 Vanderbilt, No. 22 North Carolina, No. 29 Ohio State, No. 30 Florida State, No. 31 Washington, No. 37 Louisville, No. 38 South Carolina and No. 40 Northwestern.

Freshman Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.) also shot a seven-over 79 with two birdies which is tied for 60th. As a team, the Cougars are 16 strokes out of the top 10 with a first-round score of 321 (+33).

"We feel like we have a good chance to bounce back," said CofC head coach Jamie Futrell, prior to this weekend's tournament and a disappointing 21st-place finish at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on March 11-13 in Baton Rouge, La. "We are more familiar with this course and it is going to be exactly like the field we just saw at LSU. We will definitely have to make some major improvements to compete against this type of field. But, we have to put ourselves out there to see if we can play with the best."

Play continues tomorrow as the Cougars tee-off at 8:30 a.m. (ET) and are paired with UNC Wilmington and golfers from Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest and South Carolina, who are competing as individuals.
