BOONE, N.C. - Starting pitcher Ryan Arrowood (Rutherfordton, N.C./Central) set career highs with 10 strikeouts and eight innings pitched to lead Appalachian State University baseball to an 8-3 win over Cornell in the opener of a three-game non-conference series on Thursday afternoon at blustery Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
With temperatures hovering around 40 degrees and strong gusts pushing the wind chill near freezing, Appalachian (11-11) collected its 20th win in its last 21 non-conference tilts at Smith Stadium.
Arrowood highlighted the victory by giving ASU perhaps its best start of the year on the mound. The right-handed junior labored through the first four innings, allowing eight hits as Cornell (1-12) jumped out to a 3-1 lead.
However, as the brisk afternoon moved into evening, Arrowood got stronger. He surrendered just two hits over his final four innings and retired 13 of the final 16 batters he faced while pitching into the eighth inning for the first time in his career. In all, he scattered 10 hits over eight innings of work but threw 83 of his 119 pitches for strikes, issuing just one walk to go along with his career-high 10 strikeouts.
Tyler Tewell (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) provided the spark the Mountaineers needed offensively when he hit a three-run homer to left center field in the sixth inning that gave ASU its first lead of the game at 4-3. Appalachian tacked on another run in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to turn the tight ballgame into a rout.
In addition to Tewell's three-run bomb, ASU received 2-for-5 efforts from Tyler Zupcic (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) and Trey Holmes (Rockwell, N.C./East Rowan) to lead the Mountaineers' 10-hit attack. Tewell lead all players with his three RBI while Holmes drove in two and Zupcic and Jeremy Dowdy (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) added an RBI apiece.
Brian Billigen, Tom D'Alessandro, Mickey Brodsky and Marshall Yanzick each had two hits for Cornell, which suffered the worst loss of its winless spring-break road trip through Virginia and North Carolina. Thursday's game was the Big Red's sixth in six days on the trip to date, which began with five losses to Radford and James Madison by a total of just 11 runs.
Appalachian and Cornell continue their three-game series on Friday with a 3 p.m. contest at Smith Stadium.
