College of Charleston 7, Elon 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Elon women's tennis team's three-match winning streak came to an end this afternoon as College of Charleston defeated the Phoenix, 7-0, at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point. With the loss, the Phoenix falls to 7-8 on the season and to 3-3 in Southern Conference play. The Cougars improve to a season record of 9-7 (1-0 SoCon) with the victory.
The match got underway with doubles play, where Viviana Stavreva and Andrea Pont Grau took on the Cougars' Caroline Newman and Christin Newman at number three. The Newman sisters earned the victory over the Elon duo, 8-0. On court two, Bryn Khoury and Frida Jansaker took an early lead over Katie Lee and Kinsey Casey but eventually fell 8-5 giving CofC the doubles point. Jordan Johnston and Briana Berne played a tight match against Emma Hayman and Irene Viana but dropped the close match by a score of 8-7 (6).
In singles action, Kelly Kambourelis claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Pont Grau at number six to increase the Cougars' lead to 2-0. Johnston fell to Christin Newman, 6-3, 6-1, at number one, while Caroline Newman picked up the win over Jansaker, 6-1, 6-2, on court three to clinch the match for the Cougars, 4-0, with three singles matches still in play.
Berne played two tight sets with Viana at the number five spot but could not manage to grab the win as it went to Viana 6-4, 6-4. The Cougars added another point to the team score with Casey's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stavreva at number four.
At number two, Khoury won her first set against Hayman, 6-3, and then dropped the second, 6-4, for the match to head into a third set. Khoury kept the final set close but Hayman was able to pull away and take the set 6-4 for the final victory for CofC.
Chattanooga 7, Lee University 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team snapped a two-match skid with a 7-0 shutout of Lee University today. The Lady Mocs even their record at 6-6 with today's win while the Flames dropped to 4-2.
With a threat of bad weather in the Chattanooga area, both coaches agreed to start the day with singles play. Sophomore Jenna Nurik responded by blanking Kelsey Gray (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1. Freshman Alex Flynn snapped her personal three-match losing streak in singles action with a (6-2, 6-1) win over Annie Sundberg at No. 2. Flynn has a team-best 13-7 record this season.
Juniors Emily Hangstefer and Shaina Singh both snapped two-match losing streaks with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Freshman Diana Zora and junior Brianna Wishing both got their first wins of the spring at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
The rain held off long enough to get in the doubles matches. Flynn and Hangstefer defeated Gray and Emily Orist (8-2) at No. 1, followed by Zora and junior Charlotte Bossy's (8-1) win over Sara Anix and Kassidy Sherlin at No. 3.
Nurik and Singh were up 5-0, but had to battle for an 8-6 win over Annie Sundberg and Tarah Garner at No. 2. It was Nurik and Singh's sixth-straight win as they improve to a team-high 14-5 on the year.
The Lady Mocs return to Southern Conference action this weekend when they host Wofford (10-7, 2-1 SoCon) and Furman (5-8, 2-0 SoCon). Chattanooga is tied for third in the league with the Terriers at 2-1 in SoCon action.
Match time against Wofford is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) on the UTC Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 26. Furman is second in the SoCon and will visit UTC at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, at the Champions Club.
