College of Charleston 6, Cornell 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team took down Cornell,6-1, in non-conference action at Patriots Point on Tuesday afternoon.
CofC (8-7) handed Cornell (7-4) only its fourth loss of the season as the Cougars swept the doubles point and won all but one match in straight sets.
"It was a good performance in our last non-conference match," said head coach Angelo Anastopoulo. "I feel certain that our challenging non-conference schedule has prepared us for the upcoming Southern Conference schedule.
"I was so happy and proud of Jamie Harrell picking up her first CofC singles victory. She has overcome more pain and setbacks - a shoulder injury - than any player to come through the program and worked really hard to earn that victory today."
No. 2 pairing Jamie Harrell and Kinsey Casey finished first with a dominant, 8-2 victory over Christine Ordway and Ryann Young. The No. 3 sister pairing of Caroline Newman and Christin Newman finished moments later with a victory over Sinziana Chis and Ruxandra Dumitrescu by an identical set score. With the doubles point in hand, No. 1 pairing Emma Hayman and Irene Viana battled out an 8-5 victory over Kelly Comolli and Shannon Comolli to sweep the doubles round.
On the singles side, Dumitrescu earned the Big Red's only point when she took down Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) by a score of 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot to even the match.
Caroline Newman put the Cougars back on top with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Chis at No. 3 to put the Cougars back in the lead.
No. 4 Viana defeated Kelly Comolli by a 6-4, 6-2 margin and No. 1 Christin Newman solidified the win for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ordway.

UNC Asheville 6, Western Carolina 1
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Taking a break from Southern Conference action Tuesday, Western Carolina (2-9, 1-5 SoCon) suffered a 6-1 loss to UNC Asheville (6-7) from the Big South at the Crowne Plaza Tennis Center in Asheville. The Catamounts fell just shy of the doubles point and could not regain the momentum. Western Carolina's No. 1 doubles team of Ainhoa Iglesias-Díaz and Carolina Lainez and Lainez in singles action picked up wins for the Catamounts.
The Catamounts were off to a good start in doubles as Ainhoa Iglesias-Díaz and Carolina Lainez fought for an 8-4 win in the No. 1 doubles contest. The Bulldogs answered with a decisive 8-5 victory in the No. 2 match, winning the point with the No. 3 match being defaulted by the Catamounts.
In singles play, UNC Asheville jumped out to a quick start that would be the difference in the match. Already being ahead two to nothing from the doubles point and the defaulted match at No. 6, the Bulldogs defeated Katie Barry in the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2.
The Catamounts were able to answer in the No. 2 singles match. After dropping the first set 7-5, Carolina Lainez handedly defeated Stephanie Schon 6-1, 6-0.
Though the rest of the matches would come down to the wire, it was the only answer the Catamounts could muster against the Bulldogs.
After winning the first set 6-4, WCU's Izabella Glinska fell in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-4 in the final two. Devon Cavanaugh would need three sets to defeat Karen Jiménez Sarmiento in the No. 4 match, winning 6-1, 0-6, 6-2.
The Bulldogs would pick up the No. 3 match as well with Zoe Hamil besting Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz 7-5, 6-4.
Western Carolina will look to get back on track as it continues on its non-conference swing as the Catamounts take on Coastal Carolina Sunday in Cullowhee with a 10:00 a.m. start.
