SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Daniel Stallsmith, a junior baseball player at Furman, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for March 23, the league office announced today.
The Huntersville, N.C., native holds a 3.81 GPA in history.
Stallsmith earned two starts last weekend and went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 12.2 innings of work. The lefthander was the winning pitcher in Furman's 4-2 victory over the defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks, currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. Stallsmith pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball and started the first 4.2 innings without giving up a hit. In his second start of the week against Wofford, Stallsmith gave up just three hits over seven innings and did not give up a run. Opponents managed to hit just .182 against him last week.
Furman returns to the diamond tonight against USC Upstate before opening up the weekend series at home against UNCG.
