Catamounts post eighth top-10 finish of the 2010-11 season
Stockbridge, Ga. - Senior Josefine Sundh carded a team-low, two-over par, 74, on Tuesday to pace the squad as Western Carolina finished eighth out of 15 teams at the John Kirk / Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State at the par-72, 6,074-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club.
WCU was just six strokes out of fifth place in the final standings, scoring the team's eighth top-10 finish of the season. The Catamounts' three-round score of 919 ranks 21st in the program's record books for 54-hole tournaments.
Also, only three of the seven schools that finished ahead of WCU in the final standings rank behind the Catamounts - currently 67th in NCAA Division I - in the most recent GolfStat ranks.
No. 25 Notre Dame led start-to-finish to claim the team championship by 17 strokes over second place Maryland, 888-to-905. East Tennessee State placed third, one-stroke in arrears of the Terrapins at 906, with Daytona State College finishing fourth at 909 and James Madison fifth with a three-round total of 913.
Mitsuki Katahira of Daytona State was one of two golfers to card a tournament-record low round of 66 on Tuesday to edge Notre Dame's Becca Huffer for the individual medalist honors. Katahira shot six-under 210 while Huffer was a stroke back at 211. After consecutive even-par rounds on Monday, Jessie Hollandsworth of Maryland shot three-under 69 on the final 18 holes to finish at three-under, 213, three-strokes off the pace in third while Nine Muehl of ETSU carded a 66 on Tuesday to rally to fourth-place overall at two-under, 214.
Sundh fired rounds of 77, 73 and 74 to finish with an eight-over par 224 among a three-way tie for 11th-place. The Kumla, Sweden, native advanced six positions in the final standings for the Catamounts. Her 54-hole score of 224 ranks tied for 22nd in school history for three-round events.
Junior Blaire Minter posted the team's second-best final round with a three-over 75 to place tied for 38th at 233, while sophomore Malin Jansson finished in a tie for 25th. Minter moved up eight spots on the final ledger while Jansson slipped three slots from her Monday ranking.
Rounding out WCU's side were senior Tiffany Schisler, who shot 81 on Tuesday to finish tied for 53rd, and junior Rachel Nelson in a tie for 61st after shooting 85 in the final round.
Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks as it travels east to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, hosted by the College of Charleston. WCU finished 13th at the event a year ago with Sundh leading the team with a 12th-place finish.
