Wofford 4, Georgia Southern 3
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Wofford men's tennis team edged out a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon after traveling to Statesboro, Georgia for their third conference match of the season. After some very competitive matches, the Terriers tallied four points after winning the doubles point and getting wins in singles play from seniors Michael Shecter and Alan Donald, as well as sophomore Drew Superstein.
Wofford moves to a 6-7 overall record with a 2-1 standing in the Southern Conference. The loss ends a four match win streak for Georgia Southern and drops the Eagles to 8-6 overall and a 1-1 SoCon record.
In doubles, Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk grabbed their third doubles victory in a row with a close 9-8(4) finish over GSU's Juan Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam at the top spot. At the No. 2 slot, seniors Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy took their match against Alain Garrido and Marco Osorio to a tie-breaker as well, but fell short 9-8(2). Michael Schecter and Jack Seiffert had a solid 8-3 win over GSU's Edio Castahel and Sebastien Felt at the No. 3, giving the Terrier the early lead with the doubles point.
After Wofford lost the first two singles matches at No. 1 and 3, Donald won the first singles point against GSU's Felt. Donald beat Felt in straight sets at the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 7-5. Schecter put the Terriers in position for the win with a win against Verdam at No. 2. Schecter took his match to three sets, coming out on top after a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 finish.
Superstein secured the overall win for Coach Rod Ray's team with a victory at the No. 5 position. Superstein posted his sixth win at the No. 5 spot after defeating GSU's Castahel 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Tom Wood had a back-and-forth battle against GSU's Mark Paetz at the No. 6 spot, but came just shy of winning the singles point. Wood's match finished 6-7(7-9), 7-5, 7-5.
UNCG 5, Davidson 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. - UNCG moved to 4-0 in Southern Conference play with its sixth straight win Saturday, wrapping up a season-high four-match road swing with a 5-2 over Davidson.
The Spartans (10-3, 4-0 SoCon) won five singles matches after dropping the doubles point.
At No. 1, Orcun Seyrek cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chris Mark, while Timion Meijds rebounded from losing the first set to take a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Joe Schafer at No. 2.
Yaroslav Litus picked up a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Calum Gee at No. 3, and Ahmet Sarioglu grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Walker Lyons at No. 4. Chanon Varapongsittikul knocked off Arie Hefter at No. 5, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, for his fifth straight win.
Davidson (4-11, 0-3 SoCon) earned its lone singles win at No. 6, as Kevin Moore topped Zach Reece 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcats earned the doubles point on the strength of wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Ethan Kallick and Lyons dropped Litus and Jacob Wright at No. 2, 9-8, and Mark and Moore downed Varapongsittikul and Sarioglu at No. 3, 8-3.
Seyrek and Meijs rolled past Gee and Schafer at No. 1, 8-2.
The Spartans moved to 4-0 in the SoCon for the third straight season. UNCG opened league play 6-0 in 2009 and 8-0 in 2010.
