Mayer, Elon Off to Good Start at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Mayer's first-round score of three-over-par 75 has helped lead the Elon Phoenix women's golf team into a third place tie after 18 holes of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary. The Phoenix totaled a mark of 315 as a team on day one of the 36-hole, 22-team tournament.

Mayer, who was one-under on the par five holes and tallied 13 pars, is tied for sixth among the 112 golfers in the field.

Trailing Mayer by four strokes, and in a tie for 16th, is Martyna Mierzwa who fired a round of 79. She sits one shot ahead of teammate Shannon Prunty who is tied for 21st after an 18-hole mark of 80. Both Tara McFadden and Lindsey Thomka posted scored of 81 and are tied for 38th with a round to play.

Yale's Seo Hee Moon fired a 66 on day one to lead the individual field. She leads a group of four golfers by eight strokes heading into Sunday's final round of play.

Yale also sits on top of the team leaderboard after shooting a 296 on Saturday. Yale leads St. John's (308) by 12 shots. Elon is tied for third with Penn at 315 with Old Dominion and Georgetown both with a 317 on day one to tie for fifth.
