Schnell, Day Earn Outdoor Track and Field Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG junior Ashley Schnell has been named Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week while Elon senior Veronica Day was named the SoCon Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for their performances for all meets, March 11-13.  The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

Schnell, a Lincoln, Neb., native, won the 800m at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational over the weekend with a time of 2:12.69.  Schnell led for the majority of the race despite windy conditions to take the title by three seconds.  Her mark also set the UNCG school record by five seconds.

Day, a senior from Vienna, Va., won both the long jump and triple jump at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational.  Day also ran the third leg of the 4 x 100m relay that took top honors at the meet.  Day currently ranks first in the SoCon in the long jump and in the 4 x 100m relay and is second in the conference in the triple jump.

Other top performers this week included:

Elon junior Amy Salek - Finished first in the 400m with a time of 55.43 and third in the 200m with a time of 25.21 at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Invitational.  Also ran anchor for the 4 x 400m relay team that took first place.

Wofford freshman Katie Kessler - Placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:18.10 at the Palmetto Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
