SPARTANBURG, S.C. - David Orces, a sophomore men's tennis player at The Citadel, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for March 16, the league office announced today.
The Guayaquil, Ecuador native holds a 3.559 GPA in business administration.
The sophomore went 4-1 last week for the Bulldogs, which included a 2-0 record in SoCon action. His lone loss last week came against Alex Kostanov of South Carolina in the second match of a doubleheader. In the loss, Orces forced a tiebreaker in the first set, won the second set and loss by a tight three games in the third set super-tiebreaker. He registered singles wins at the No. 1 position over Wofford, Appalachian State, Case Western and James Madison to improve his dual singles record to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Citadel returns to conference play this weekend when the Bulldogs visit Chattanooga and Samford.
Other nominees included UNCG men's golfer Robert Hoadley and Chattanooga women's golfer Christine Wolf.
