DAVIDSON, N.C.
- Jake Cohen posted 17 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots, four assists and three steals to lead Davidson to an 85-65 men's basketball victory over James Madison in the 2011 CBI Presented by Zebra Pen at Belk Arena Tuesday night.

The Wildcats will play at Creighton in the second round of the tournament Monday, March 21.

JP Kuhlman netted 14 points, and Chris Czerapowicz collected 14 points and four rebounds for the Wildcats (18-14).

Frank Ben-Eze tied a career-high with nine points to go along with four rebounds, while Brendan McKillop and Nik Cochran each scored nine.

Devon Moore led the Dukes (21-12) with 14 points and added nine rebounds, and Denzel Bowles collected 12 points and nine boards.

Davidson shot 50 percent for the game and netted 31 points off 17 JMU turnovers. The Dukes were held to 38 percent shooting from the field, including 31 percent in the second stanza.

Davidson also made 11-of-24 3-pointers while holding JMU to 2-for-9 from behind the arc.

The Wildcats used a 15-7 run that capped the first half and a 31-11 spurt after James Madison scored the first point of the second frame to build a 27-point cushion with 10:20 left in the contest.

Consecutive triples by McKillop and De'Mon Brooks sparked the first run, and another one from Cohen capped it as the OCats turned a 27-27 tie into a 10-point lead.

After Rayshawn Goins made a free throw to open the second stanza, Kuhlman netted five straight points to start the 31-11 run. Czerapowicz scored 11 points during the stretch, including two conventional 3-point plays and a 3-pointer.

The 27-point cushion was the largest lead of the game for the Wildcats, and the advantage never dipped below 20 for the rest of the game.

East Tennessee State 76, Furman 63
CollegeInsider.com Tournament

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Senior Mike Smith scored a career-high 32 points and Justin Tubbs added 22 as East Tennessee State powered past Furman, 76-63, in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Tuesday evening at the ETSU/MHSA Athletics Center.

The Buccaneers improved to 23-10 on the season and advanced to the final 12 of the 24-team tournament while Furman concluded its winningest season since 1980 with a 22-11 mark.

Smith, the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, connected on 7-of-8 first half field goal attempts and 6-of-6 trips to the foul line in the opening 20 minutes to score 21 before intermission to help ETSU to a 43-31 halftime lead.

Tubbs, a University of Alabama transfer, scored 13 of his 22 in the second half and the Bucs began the final 20 minutes on a 15-6 run to open up a 58-37 advantage as Smith finished a three-point play at the foul line with 13:21 remaining.

Redshirt-freshman Charlie Reddick scored seven of his career-high 12 points on a 14-2 Furman spurt that sliced the ETSU advantage to eight points at 62-54 on Reddick's trey with 7:21 left, but the Paladins were unable to get any closer as Tubbs scored six of the Bucs' next eight points.

East Tennessee State shot 51 percent from the field and converted on 19-of-22 trips to the foul line.  The Bucs committed just 11 turnovers while recording 12 steals and forcing the Paladins into 17 turnovers.

Reddick and Jordan Miller, who buried 4-of-8 three-point attempts in his final game as a Paladins, led the way for Furman with 12 points.  The Paladins, who held a 31-27 edge on the glass, shot just 42 percent from the floor and made only 16-of-27 free throw attempts.  The Paladins were 9-of-20 beyond the arc.

ETSU improved to 12-1 at home this season and 24-23 all-time against the Paladins.

College of Charleston 94, Dayton 84
NIT

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Andrew Goudelock knew the shots would start to fall, even after he missed his first five attempts Tuesday night.

Goudelock had a career-high 39 points, including eight 3-pointers, and College of Charleston beat defending champion Dayton 94-84 in the first round of the NIT.

The sixth-seeded Cougars (25-10) will take on No. 2 seed Cleveland State in the next round.

Goudelock didn't disappoint the near sellout crowd of 4,717 for his final game at Carolina First Arena. The senior's first 3-pointer gave Charleston the lead for good, 20-18. The senior hit two 3s three minutes later that pushed the lead to 31-21. Goudelock kept it up after halftime, adding a 3 and a jumper that gave the Cougars their largest lead at 73-55 with 8 minutes left.

Chris Wright had 21 points for Dayton (22-14), which normally would have been at home as the higher seed but its arena was being used for the NCAA tournament's opening games. A year ago, Gregory said his Dayton players were angry at losing in the Atlantic 10 tournament and took that edge into the NIT. This time, after falling to Richmond in Sunday's A-10 title game, Gregory thought his club came in more disappointed than ticked. Still, the Flyers battled back to cut Charleston's lead to 81-74 with 1:34 left on Paul Williams' inside basket.

That was as close as they could get in their sixth game in the past 11 days. Gregory sees the same drive in Charleston -- the Cougars lost the Southern Conference tournament finals to Wofford last week -- to make a long NIT run as he did with his team last season. Goudelock is that extra punch that opponents will have to stop.

Donavan Monroe added 23 points for the Cougars, who were 30 of 38 from the foul line. Goudelock surpassed his previous best of 34 points set last month against Elon. His eight 3-pointers tied his career high.
