Furman's Mellow Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Furman sophomore Andrew Mellow has been named the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 7-13.  Mellow was a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles play as the Paladins split two matches last week, falling to Georgia Southern (4-3) and beating St. John's (4-3). The Player of the Week selections are made by the conference office.

Mellow began the week at No. 3 singles and came away with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Georgia Southern's Alain Garrido.  He then moved up to the No. 2 singles position and topped the Red Storm's Stefan Bojic, 7-6, (7-5), 6-4.  Mellow has now won four of his last five singles matches for the Paladins, including three straight.

Competing at No. 1 doubles with Sawyer Duncan, the Furman tandem came away with doubles victories in both matches last week.  Mellow and Duncan topped Juan Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam of Georgia Southern, 8-3 before recording an 8-1 win over Pavel Cerny and Mike Lampa of St. John's.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Mickael Trintignac, The Citadel's David Orces, Elon's Chase Helpingstine, Georgia Southern's Matthijs Verdam, UNCG's Yaroslav Litus, Samford's Alexander Sajonz and Wofford's Alan Donald.
