Josefine Sundh, Women's Golf Finish Seventh at Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate
Juniors Blaire Minter, Rachel Nelson both card one-under 71 on Monday

Augusta, Ga. - Western Carolina juniors Blaire Minter and Rachel Nelson both fired final rounds of one-under par 71 on Monday as the Catamounts rallied to finish seventh at the Administaff Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate, hosted by Augusta State at the Forest Hills Golf Club. WCU shot 294 as a team over the final 18 holes which ranked as the second lowest of the final round and was tied for the fifth-lowest of the 54-hole event.

Senior Josefine Sundh led the Catamounts with a seventh-place finish, her third top-10 of the season and the 12th of her career. The Kumla, Sweden native had a back-and-forth final 18 holes, posting seven bogies and four birdies to finish at three-over, 75, for a two-day total of four-over par, 220. Sundh was the highest individual finisher of those who started on the back nine Monday.

Minter posted four birdies on her final 18 holes on Monday, playing the back nine first at one-over and the front nine at two-under for the 71, jumping 21 spots in the final standings to finish tied for 20th overall at 225. Nelson moved 15 positions into a tie for 30th with her one-under 71, carding 15 pars and two birdies on her front nine with one bogey on the par-5 No. 6. She was one stroke back of her classmate at 226 for the three-round event.

Nelson additionally finished tied for sixth with 35 pars over her 54-hole event while Sundh finished tied for second with Minter in birdies with 11 and par-3 scoring at two-under (2.83) for the event.

Rounding out WCU's finishers were sophomore Malin Jansson in a tie for 55th after a 54-hole score of 235 and redshirt senior Tiffany Schisler was 86th overall with a 254.

Eighth-ranked Purdue fired 13-under as a team on Monday to win the team championship by 21 strokes over second-place Augusta State which finished with an 880 as a team. Texas-San Antonio was third, eight strokes back of the Lady Jaguars with 45th-ranked Coastal Carolina finishing fourth at 893. Arkansas-Little Rock rounded out the top five teams with an even 900 for the three-round tournament.

Augusta State freshman Casey Kennedy claimed individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205, posting a one-under 71 on Monday to complete her tournament. Purdue's Paula Reto placed second despite the lowest round of the day at 66. She was five strokes off the pace at 210 while teammate Numa Gulyanamitta finished third, seven-strokes in arrears at 217.

Western Carolina returns to the links on Sunday, March 20 through Monday, March 21 at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State at the par-72, 6,047-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. WCU posted a program-best, third-place finish at the event back in the 2007-08 season.

 

 

SAMFORD WOMEN'S GOLF: RAIN SHORTENS PLAY ON OPENING DAY OF SAMFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE

ONEONTA, Ala. --- Play in the 2011 Samford Intercollegiate women's golf tournament was halted early due to rain Monday as an incessant rainstorm rolled through the area as the teams were closing out the second round of the 54-hole event. Samford finished the first round of play as the third-place team in the two-day tournament being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club.

The Bulldogs carded an 18-hole score of 304 Monday to jump out to the third-place position. True freshman Alex Jasper paced Samford with a 2-under-par 70 (34-36) to move into third place in the individual standings.

Fellow freshman Natalie Mitchell posted a first-round score of 77 (38-39) for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Kayla Turner and junior Sarah Butts followed closely with 18-hole marks of 78 (39-39) and 79 (39-40), respectively.

Anna Heim, Samford's sophomore from Lafayette, La., rounded out the team's official scores Monday with an 18-hole mark of 82 (41-41). The Bulldogs' true freshman Savanna Schubert is competing as an individual this week and fired an 18-hole score of 76 (36-40). Schubert, Samford's native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., is tied for ninth place in the individual standings.

Troy carded a first-round team score of 300 to take a slim three-stroke lead following the opening 18 holes of the 2011 Samford Intercollegiate. Jacksonville State, the two-time reigning champions of the annual event, sits in second place with an early score of 303.

Individually, South Alabama's Nina Offenburg posted the best 18-hole score of the day with a sizzling 4-under-par 68 (34-34). Troy's Signy Arnorsdottir finished the first round of play in second place with a 69 (35-34), while Samford's Jasper held the third spot.

The 2011 Samford Intercollegiate will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m. (CDT) as the teams are scheduled to conclude play in the second round of action being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. The teams will then close out the two-day tournament with the third-and-final round of competition Tuesday.

 


Rankin Ties Career Best at Administaff Lady Jaguar Invitational

AUGUSTA, GA. -- The Wofford College women's golf team fired a three-round score of 931 (313-310-308) to finish in 15th at the Administaff Lady Jaguar Invitational host by Augusta State University at the par-72 Forest Hills Golf Club. The opening two rounds were held on Sunday, with the final round on Monday.

Alex Rankin led the Terriers on day one with rounds of 73 and 76, and finished with the team's second lowest round on day with a 78 for a 227. Her 227 54-hole score tied the lowest score of her career and tied the mark for the third lowest 54-hole score in Wofford Division I history.

Anne Marie Covar fired rounds of 79, 77 and 75 for a 231, while Meredith Few turned in her scorecard with rounds of 79, 80 and 75 for a 234. Covar and Few tied for the Terrier lowest round three score with their 75s. For Few her 234 was one shot lower than her previous 54-hole career mark.

Sarah Hurt was the final Terrier scorer with rounds of 82, 77 and 80 for a 239.

Purdue won the event with a team score of 859, while Augusta State's Casey Kennedy won the individual title with a 205.

The Terriers will tee off at the Low Country Intercollegiate as the host team on March 20 through 21 in Hilton Head, S.C.
