SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Furman's Morgan Hughey has been selected as the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Elon's Lauren Taylor has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week for all games March 7-13. The selections are made by the league office.

Hughey, a senior from Gaffney, S.C., led the Paladins to a 5-2 record on the week while batting .571 from the plate.  The Furman second baseman hit safely in six of the team's seven games and scored five runs while also knocking in five.  In the opening game of the Western Carolina series, Hughey hit a solo home run that would eventually end up being the game-winning run.  In the second game of the series, Hughey delivered with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth which drove in the game-winner.  In Sunday's finale against the Catamounts, the senior scored the eventual winning run in the second inning to complete the series sweep.  Hughey posted a .762 slugging percentage and a .602 on-base percentage on the week.

Taylor, a senior at Elon, was selected for the second straight week and the third time this season as the conference's Pitcher of the Week.  Taylor started one game and went 2-0 on the mound as the Phoenix began conference play against College of Charleston.  The Lilllington, N.C., native went 12.2 innings in the circle with a flawless 0.00 ERA, while striking out 10.  In the first game of the doubleheader against the Cougars, Taylor pitched a complete-game shutout.  The senior pitcher improved her season record to 8-2 with an overall ERA of 1.47. 

Also receiving nominations for player of the week were Appalachian State's Hannah Dow, College of Charleston's Carly Corthell, Elon's Kaitlyn Piazzolla, Georgia Southern's Hanna Ennis, UNCG's Kristen Gabel, Samford's Amanda Jordan and Chattanooga's Natalie Powers.

Also nominated for pitcher of the week were Appalachian State's Louise Gibson, Furman's Lauren Collier, UNCG's Cory Mattson and Chattanooga's Kandace Irwin.
