UNCG 5, Samford 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UNCG moved to 2-0 in the Southern Conference with its third straight win, a 5-2 road triumph over Samford on Thursday.
For the third straight match, UNCG (7-3, 2-0 SoCon) won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Orcun Seyrek and Timion Meijs took an 8-4 win over Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds at No. 1, while Ahmet Sarioglu and Chanon Varapongsittikul downed Fernando Costa and Carson Kadi by the same score at No. 3.
At No. 2, Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright saw their four-match winning streak come to an end with an 8-4 loss to Zac Dunkle and Alexander Sajonz.
The Spartans took singles wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to grab the win. Meijs dispatched Dunkle at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, and Sarioglu topped Reynolds at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.
Litus and Varapongsittikul both rebounded from opening-set losses, as Litus dropped Abalos at No. 3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Varapongsittikul defeated Costa 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Samford (7-3, 0-1 SoCon), which dropped its second straight match, got a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win from Kadi over Seyrek at No. 1. Sajonz handed UNCG redshirt freshman Zach Reece his first loss of the dual season, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. Reece falls to 6-1.
Chattanooga 6, Murray State 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team won its fifth-straight match with a 6-1 win over Murray State today. Weather forced the Mocs and Racers to the covered courts at the nearby Baylor School as Chattanooga evened its record at 6-6 on the year.
The two teams agreed to start with singles play on a chilly and rainy afternoon in Chattanooga. The match was decided in those six pairings, so the doubles portion was not contested.
Sophomore Roberto Vieira started the day with a quick (6-0, 6-0) win over Jorge Caetano at No. 1. It was Vieira's fourth win in a row as he improved to 8-7 in singles action.
Sophomore Chris Smith made the score 2-0 with his (6-2, 6-3) win against Joao Camara at No. 2. Smith has won four of his last five singles matches and is now 6-5 in spring action.
Freshman Trent Cobb put UTC up 3-0 with a three-set win over Luka Milicevic (6-2, 2-6, 6-1). With the win, Cobb evens his overall record at 9-9 and is 2-0 at No. 3.
Murray State finally got on the board when Arthur Valle defeated UTC sophomore William Disterdick (6-1, 6-1) at No. 5. Sophomore Jackson Tresnan clinched the match with his (6-3, 6-2) win against Renaldo Domoney at No. 4. For Tresnan, it was his eighth consecutive win as he improved to a team-leading 11-7 on the year.
Senior Rick van de Bovenkamp closed out the afternoon with a (6-0, 6-4) win over Mason Johnson at No. 6. Van de Bovenkamp is now 7-6 on the year, setting a new single season career-high for wins during his time at UTC.
