Samford and Chattanooga in Title Hunt

SAMFORD WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST PLACE AFTER OPENING DAY OF USA LADY JAGUAR INVITATIONAL

MOBILE, Ala. --- The Samford University women's golf team carded a two-round score of 608 Monday to move into sole possession of first place at the 2001 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational being held at the Azalea City Golf Club (par 72, 6,051 yards).

Samford opened the two-day tournament with a first-round score of 300 before closing out Monday's competition with a round-two mark of 308.

The Bulldogs hold a one stroke advantage over the homestanding South Alabama Lady Jaguars. South Alabama tallied a 36-hole score of 609, while Louisiana-Monroe sits in third place at 614.

Individually, Samford was paced by true freshman Natalie Mitchell's day-one total of 152. The Bulldogs' highly-touted native of Germantown, Tenn., opened Monday's competition with a first-round score of 73 before closing out the last 18 holes with a 79. Mitchell heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for seventh place in the tournament's individual standings.

Samford's Anna Heim and Kayla Turner also completed the second round in the top 10. Both players tallied identical 36-hole scores of 153 and are tied for the ninth-place position in the tournament.

Heim, the Bulldogs' sophomore from Lafayette, La., registered round-by-round scores of 75 and 78 on Monday, while Turner carded marks of 72 and 81, respectively. Turner, Samford's sophomore from Clarksville, Tenn., turned in the Bulldogs' best round of the day with her tournament-opening 72.

Samford's lone upperclassman, Sarah Butts, fired a second-round score of 73 to move into 13th place in the individual standings with a 36-hole score of 154. The Bulldogs' junior from Carrollton, Ga., opened the tournament with a first-round mark of 81. Samford's Savannah Schubert rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring with a 36-hole tally of 158 (80-78).

The Samford University women's golf team will conclude play in the 2011 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin competition in the third-and-final round to be held at the Azalea City Golf Club.

 

Chattanooga Tied for Second Heading into Final Round of Kinderlou Forest Challenge

Four Mocs are in top 20 led by Emma de Groot & Yushira Budhram who shot a career-best four-under par 69

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- Chattanooga freshman Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) fired a career-best four-under par total of 69 in leading the Mocs to a tie for second with 18 holes to play at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge.  Budhram carded six birdies on her day en route to carrying the day for UTC.

She is tied for fifth with teammate Emma de Groot (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) at two-over par 148.  de Groot, who was tied for the lead after round one, shot 77 (+4) today.  The duo is two shot off the pace set by the trio of Charlotte Guilleux (Georgia State), Casey Kennedy (Augusta State) and Laura Wearn (Furman) at 146.

Budhram's 69 is a new tournament record.  It tops the former number of 70 (-3), held by four golfers including de Groot in last year's second round.

The duo is not the only Mocs currently in the top 20.  Junior Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and freshman Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) are tied for 19th at 154 (+8).  Loza shot three-over par 76, while Duvernay, playing as an individual, shot 81 (+8) while battling flu-like illness.

Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) is tied for 31st after today's 79 (+6) gave her a two-day total of 156.  Wolf scored Chattanooga's first eagle of the 2010-11 season on the par 5 18th hole today.  That tied with Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) at 79 today.  Britt is tied for 48th overall at 160.

Coastal Carolina maintained is first round lead taking a six-stroke advantage over the Mocs and Florida State into the final round.  The Chanticleers are at 600 after a second round score of 297.  Chattanooga and FSU are tied for second at 606.  East Carolina is fourth at 611.

Among the teams the Mocs currently lead are Southern Conference rivals Furman and Western Carolina as well as No. 12 Georgia.  UTC holds a 12-shot lead over the Paladins, while Western Carolina is 17 strokes behind the Mocs.  Chattanooga is 20 shots clear of the Bulldogs.

The Mocs tee off at 9 a.m, in a shotgun start.  They will be paired with Coastal Carolina and Florida State.  Live scoring is at GoMocs.com.

Furman's Wearn Takes Share Of First Place At Kinderlou Forest Challenge

Valdosta, Ga. - Furman's Laura Wearn (74-72=146) fired a one-under 72 on Monday to grab a share of the lead at even par after two rounds at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge at the par-73 Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.

Wearn, a Charlotte, N.C., native, notched a birdie at No. 2 and answered a bogey on the back nine with a birdie at the par-three, No. 17 to post the fourth best round of the day.  The Sophomore is tied for the lead with Charlotte Guilleux (75-71=146) of Georgia State and Casey Kennedy (72-74=146) of Augusta State after 36 holes.

The Paladins (306-312=618), tied for fourth after opening round play, dropped to seventh place after shooting 20-over 312 on Monday.  Coastal Carolina (303-297=600) holds a six-stroke tournament lead over second place Chattanooga (305-301=606) while Florida State, East Carolina and Augusta State round out the top five in the 14-team field.

Final round action in the 54-hole tournament is set to begin on Tuesday morning.

WCU Women's Golf Slips to Eighth at Kinderlou Forest Challenge

Senior Tiffany Schisler leads squad in a tie for 19th overall

Valdosta, Ga. - Western Carolina struggled through Monday's second round at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge, dropping from second place into eighth through 36 holes at the par-73, 6,359-yard course. The Catamounts shot 319 in the second round to fall to 623 for the tournament, which is being hosted by Kennesaw State.

Tuesday's final round begins at 9:00 am with a shotgun start. Fans can follow all of the action with live scoring through www.GolfStatResults.com.

Senior Tiffany Schisler leads WCU in the clubhouse at 154 through the first two rounds, tied for 19th overall. The Nags Head, N.C., native posted five bogies on the day, birdying the second hole of her round to return to even par through three before five bogies in her final 15 holes. Statistically, Schisler is tied for 11th out of the 75-golfer field with 23 pars.

First-round leading Coastal Carolina trimmed six strokes off its opening round score to post a tourney-low 297 on Monday, stretching its lead to six over the second-place tie between Chattanooga and Florida State at 606. East Carolina is fourth at 611 with Augusta State rounding out the top five teams at 613.

Entering Tuesday's final round, there is a three-way tie atop the leader board between Charlotte Guilleux of Georgia State, Laura Wearn of Furman and Augusta State's Casey Kennedy, all shooting even-par, 146. Brittany Henderson stands fourth to lead Coastal Carolina with a one-over, 147, while Chattanooga teammates Yushira Budhram and first-round, co-leader Emma de Groot are tied for fifth at two-over, 148.

Sophomore Malin Jansson slipped from the top 10 into a tie for 26th after shooting seven-over, 80, on Monday. After opening with two birdies and a pair of bogies on the front nine to make the turn even, she suffered four bogies and a triple-bogey on the par-4 12th and could not recover. Senior Josefine Sundh shot 81 to move into a tie for 37th overall at 158. Sundh scored par on the final five holes of her second round, but eight scores of bogey-or-worse dropped her to eight-over, 81.

Juniors Rachel Nelson (80-80=160) and Blaire Minter (76-86=162) round out Western Carolina's scores in ties for 48th and 59th, respectively.

The final 18 holes begin at 9:00 am with a shotgun start.
