Elon Tops UTPA, 4-2

ELON, N.C. - Despite the strong winds and threat of storms, the Elon men's tennis team managed to pick up a 4-2 victory over the visiting UT-Pan American Broncs on Monday afternoon at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Because of the threatening weather, the day started with singles play and the teams did not play doubles. Elon improved to 6-4 on the season with its third consecutive victory.
 
The Phoenix earned singles wins on courts two, three, four and five. Rookie Cameron Silverman was the first off the court, not giving up a game in a win over Marcus Dornauf at number three. The victory extended Silverman's winning streak to three straight. At number five, senior Alberto Rojas made quick work of Sebastien Job, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 result to move to 4-5 on the year.
 
Eric Turner put Elon on top 3-0 after defeating Beau Bernstein, 6-2, 6-3, at number two for his second consecutive win. On court four, Chase Helpingstine won his third match in a row with a 6-2, 6-2 result over Matt Teivans to clinch the match for the Phoenix.
 
The Broncs' Aswin Vijayaragavan pulled out a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over Philip Nemec at the top singles spot in a match that took nearly two hours to complete. UTPA got its final point after Elon's Cody Stauffer-MacDowell retired in the second set at number six.
 
Elon will conclude a four-match home stand on Saturday afternoon when it hosts the Radford Highlanders at noon.
