UNCG 5, Coastal Carolina 2
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG swept the doubles point and then took four of the six singles matches as the Spartans cruised past Coastal Carolina, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon inside the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans moved to an even 1-1 on the young spring season, while the Chanticleers dropped to 0-1 after their season-opener.
UNCG got off to a hot start as Mikayla Rogers and Devon Sutherland teamed up for an easy 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. The duo of Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins clinched the doubles point for the Spartans with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Stephanie Macfarlane and Alex Whitehead made it a clean sweep for UNCG at No. 1 doubles as they won a hard-fought 8-6 match to give the Spartans the early 1-0 advantage.
Mikayla Bunea drew the match even at one for the Chanticleers as she defeated Alex Whitehead at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
It was all UNCG the rest of the way though as Annette Rios put the Spartans back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Dilara Yurtkuran put the Spartans ahead, 3-1, with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Kourtney Kowal, 6-2, 6-3.
Stephanie Macfarlane had the honors of clinching the match for UNCG as she dispatched Mikaela Kristofersson, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to give the Spartans a 4-1 team lead.
The Chanticleers would take No. 5 singles as Diana Mortlock won 6-3, 6-3, but Niltooli Wilkins capped off the day for UNCG with her win at No. 1 singles. She won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second set, 6-4. Due to the match being clinched, the two went into a 10-point tiebreaker and Wilkins came out on top, 10-7, to win the match.
The Spartans won't return to competition until Feb. 16, when they travel to East Carolina for a 3 p.m. match.
Furman 6, UNC Asheville 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Furman women's tennis team won five out of six singles matches and swept the doubles contests to pick up the Paladins' first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Paladin senior Monica Arguello, ranked 69th nationally, defeated Britney Cloer, 6-1, 6-1, in the number one singles match. Furman sophomore Lauren Kline beat Devon Cavanaugh, 1-6, 6-3, (10-5), at number two singles, and Paladin freshman Margaret Boyette recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Zoe Hamel in the number three singles match. At number four singles, Bulldog Stephanie Schon posted a 7-6(4), 4-6, (12-10) win over Paladin sophomore Jenny Porter. Furman sophomore Olivia Maurice defeated Jackie McGuirk, 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth singles match-up, and Paladin junior Susan Bitetti won by default at number six singles.
In doubles action, Boyette and Kline teamed up for an 8-1 win over Schon and Cloer at number one doubles, and Arguello and Maurice combined to defeat Cavanaugh and Hamel, 8-1, in the number two doubles match. Bitetti and Porter won by default at number three doubles.
Furman (1-1) will play at #9 Clemson Thursday at 3 p.m.
