SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Citadel sophomore Brunson Miller and Appalachian State senior Jerod Gardner have been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets during the weekend of Jan. 28 through Jan. 30. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Miller, a sophomore from Murrells Inlet, S.C., won the 400 meters at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational in Annapolis, Md., with a time of 48.10. He holds the school record in the 400m for a regulation indoor track, and his time over the weekend broke the school record for an oversized/banked track. Miller currently leads the conference in the event by under one second.
Gardner, a Windsor, Ga., native, broke the Appalachian school record in the shot put at the University of Kentucky Rod McCray Invitational. His shot of 56' 5" 1/3 leads the Southern Conference in the event.
The Bulldogs and Mountaineers next competition is this weekend at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., where five other conference schools will be in attendance.
Other top performers this week included:
Appalachian State sophomore Chris Moen - The Rockville, Md., native finished seventh at the University of Kentucky Rod McCray Invitational in the 800 meters and in mile run with times of 1:53.50 and 4:08.61, respectively.
Samford freshman Justin Emerson - Ran a school record 6.88 seconds in the 60 meters. His time leads the conference.
The Citadel senior Chris Castagno - Broke his own school record in the 35lb. weight throw with a distance of 57-0.25. He currently ranks third in the conference in the event.
Samford junior Michael Seaman - Had a pole vault of 16' 6" at the Clemson Invitational. He leads the SoCon in the event.
