WCU Women's Golf Second at Kinderlou Forest Challenge
Tee times for Monday's second round begin at 9 am
Valdosta, Ga. - Western Carolina has three golfers amongst the top 16 individuals to stand second overall as a team after the opening round of the Kinderlou Forest Challenge, hosted by Kennesaw State at the par-73, 6,359-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The second round is set to begin at 9:00 am with tee times on Monday. Fans can follow all of the action with live scoring through www.GolfStatResults.com.
Coastal Carolina opened the tournament at 303 and holds a one-stroke lead over Western Carolina (304) in the team standings. Southern Conference foe, 38th-ranked Chattanooga, is third, two strokes off the pace and one in arrears of WCU at 305, with No. 12 Georgia and No. 36 Florida State tied with Furman and Augusta State for fourth-place at 306.
The top 10 schools are all within six strokes of the lead after the opening round of tournament play.
Chattanooga's Emma de Groot and Hannah Thomson of Florida State stand tied atop the leader board with scores of two-under, 71. Casey Kennedy from Augusta State is third at one-under 72, with UTC's Marion Duvernay and FSU's Mary Beth Ramsay deadlocked for fourth at even-par, 73.
Sophomore Malin Jansson leads the Catamounts in a tie for ninth place after shooting a two-over, 75, in Sunday's opening round. Starting on the 10th hole, the Nykvarn, Sweden, native scored three bogies and two birdies in her first nine holes to make the turn at one-over. She fell to three-over after consecutive bogies on the par-5 fifth and par-3 sixth, but a birdie on the par-4 sixth with three par scores to close the round keeping her at two-over, 75.
Senior Tiffany Schisler and reigning Southern Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, Blaire Minter, both stand amidst a tie for 16th with identical scores of three-over, 76. Minter birdied her final hole after four bogies through the first 17 holes, while Schisler overcame a sluggish start that included bogey-or-worse on three of her first four holes and a four-over start. The Nags Head, N.C., native recovered with two birdies on the par-3 15th and par-5 18th to make the turn at two-over. Schisler then strung together six-straight pars before a bogey on the par-4 seventh on her third-from-last hole moved her to three-over for the round.
Rounding out WCU's lineup were senior Josefine Sundh, tied for 27th at four-over 77, and junior Rachel Nelson in a tie for 53rd at seven-over 80. Sundh countered six bogies with a pair of birdies, playing both nines at two over. Nelson had eight birdies with one birdie on the opening 18 holes.
The second round begins with tee times at 9:00 am on Monday morning.
Mocs Women's Golf in Third Following Opening Round of the Spring
VALDOSTA, Ga. --- Chattanooga senior Emma de Groot(Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia) is tied for first leading the Mocs to third place after 18 holes of the Kinderlou Forest Challenge. de Groot's two-under par 71 paced Chattanooga's 13-over par 305.
de Groot shot her low round of 2010-11 and tied her season-high with four birdies. She is tied with Florida State's Hannah Thomson, one stroke ahead of Casey Kennedy (Augusta State) at minus one, 72. Freshman Marion Duvernay(Publier, France) is tied for fourth with the Seminoles' Mary Beth Ramsey at even par (73).
Duvernay, playing as an individual, is a mid-season enrollee for the Mocs. She posted two birdies, 15 pars and a double bogey.
Christine Wolf (Igls, Austria) is tied for 27th after today's 77 (+4). Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) is a shot behind her teammate tied for 36th at 78 (+5) following a birdie on the par five 18th.
Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) got off to a slow start, but closed well. After making the turn at plus six, she parred each hole on the back nine and is tied for 44th at 79 (+6). Jordan Britt (Dayton, Tenn.) had the drop score of 81 (+8) losing seven shots on two holes in the first four before playing the final 14 at one over.
Coastal Carolina is the early team leader at 303, two shots clear of the Mocs. Southern Conference-rival Western Carolina is in second at 304. No. 12 Georgia, Florida State, Furman and Augusta State are tied for fourth a stroke behind Chattanooga in third.
The Mocs tee off at 9 a.m, led by Britt. Paired with Coastal Carolina and Western Carolina, she will be followed by Budhram (9:08), Loza (9:16), Wolf (9:24) and de Groot (9:32). Live scoring can be at GoMocs.com.

Wearn Guides Furman Women's Golf Into Fourth At Kinderlou Forest Challenge
Valdosta, Ga. - Sophomore Laura Wearn carded a one-over 74 to grab a share of sixth place and help Furman into a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the Kinderlou Forest Challenge at the par-73 Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga, on Sunday.
The Paladins round of 14-over put them in a four-way tie for fourth with 12th-ranked Georgia, Florida State and Augusta State. Coastal Carolina (+11) leads after the first round with Western Carolina (+12) in second place and Chattanooga (+13) in third.
Wearn, who started her round on the back nine, birdied three of her first five holes, including a pair of par fives, to pace the Paladins on Sunday. The Charlotte, N.C., native is just two strokes off of the lead of Chattanooga's Emma de Groot (-2) and Florida State's Hannah Thomson (-2) after 18 holes.
Junior Liz Wendt, playing in her first tournament of the spring, posted a first round 76 to hold a share of 16th place while senior Stefanie Kenoyer carded a 77.
Round two in the 54-hole tournament is set for Monday morning with final round action set for Tuesday.
