Appalachian State Men and Women Lead After Day One

CLEMSON, S.C. - At the conclusion of day one of the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Appalachian State leads on both the men's and women's side.  The Mountaineer men have 85.33 points while the women have 63 points.

Saturday began with the women's pentathlon and four men's heptathlon events.

Georgia Southern senior Lynndsey Hyter became the first woman to win three consecutive women's pentathlons.  Hyter totaled 3578 points after taking first place in two events, including the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.95 and the long jump with a mark of 6.08m (19'11.5"). Hyter posted a leap of 1.59m (5'2.5") in the high jump while setting a mark of 8.68m (28'5.75") in the shot put.  She also ran a time of 3:36.20 in the 800m.

The Citadel freshman Nicole Levermann and Samford College of Charleston senior Isabel Boersma won the heptathlon high jump event with leaps of 1.62 meters (5'3.75").  In the shot put, The Citadel's Andriana Love took top honors with a throw of 11.52 meters (37'9.5").  The 800m heptathlon event was won by Samford freshman Ashley Cope with a time of 2:32.21.

In the men's heptathlon, Samford athletes won each of the Day One events.  Junior Donald Cooper took first in the 60m with a time of 7.08 and in the high jump with a height of 2.02m (6'7.5").  Coming in first in the long jump was sophomore Brandon Bassett with a leap of 6.91m (22'8"). In the shot put event, Bo Ackerson-Gilroy took first with a throw of 12.02m (39'5.25").  

After four events of the heptathlon, Samford claimed the top three positions with Basset in first followed by Cooper and then Ackerson-Girlroy.  The men's heptathlon will wrap up tomorrow with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.

Junior Chris Moen from Appalachian State won the men's 3000m with a time 8:24.88, and UNCG senior Ashley Schnell ran a 9:52.39 to win the event on the women's side.

Appalachian State sophomore Gayshawna Watkins won the women's shot put with a throw of 15.06 meters (49'5").

In the men's shot put, Appalachian State senior Jerod Gardner won the event with a distance of 16.67m (54'8.25").  Two-time defending champion Malcolm Styers of Appalachian State finished second with a throw of 15.50m (50'10.25").

In the men's high jump, Appalachian State junior Darius Purcell set a SoCon Championship record with a leap 2.18m (7'1.75"), breaking the record set back in 2000.  Appalachian State's Rebecca Hazeltine won on the women's side with a jump of 1.71m (5'7.25").  Defending champion Emily Smith from the College of Charleston finished fourth in this year's championship with a height of 1.65m (5.5").

Western Carolina sophomore Lawren Willard won the men's long jump with a distance of 7.59m (24'11").  After winning the women's heptathlon, Georgia Southern's Hyter took first in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.06m (19'10.75").  Elon's Veronica Day, last year's winner, finished second with a jump of 5.95m (19'6.25).

Samford's junior Michael Seaman, the SoCon pole vault record-holder, defended his title with a vault of 4.95m (16'2.75"). 

Chattanooga won the men's distance medley relay with a time of 10:15.20. Competing for the Mocs were freshman Kyle McLarty, sophomores Jake Simms and Lucas Cotter and junior Josh Vasquez.

UNCG took the top spot in the women's distance relay posting an 11:55.95. Running for the Spartans were sophomore Shaina Sumney, freshman Shannon Hall, junior Kerry Hartman and 3000m champion Schnell.

Preliminary trials were also held Thursday in the men's and women's 60, 200, 400 and 800m dash, as well as the 60m hurdles.

Western Carolina's Cordell Livingston and Nicole Okolo won the preliminary 60m hurdles for the men and women, respectively.  Defending champion Livingston ran the event in a time of 8.21 while Okolo posted a time of 8.50, which was the fastest time for women this season in the conference.

Appalachian State junior Dennis Moore ran a 6.79 in the 60m to lead the men in the preliminary round.  On the women's side, Mountaineer freshman Breanna Alston led the way with a time of 7.61.

In the men's 200m, Appalachian State's Dennis Moore ran a time of 21.93 to lead all the qualifiers.  For the women, defending champion Jane't Carothers of Western Carolina posted a time of 24.62.

Defending men's and women's champions in the 400m set the pace in the preliminaries.  The Citadel sophomore Brunson Miller ran a 48.87 for the men while Carothers posted a 55.73.

In the men's 800m, Appalachian State sophomore Alex Taylor posted the fastest men's qualifying time with a 1:53.25. Defending champion Brandon Hudgins of Appalachian State failed to qualify for tomorrow's finals.  On the women's side, Appalachian State's Chenel McFadden paced the way with a time of 2:13.84.

Sunday's events begin at 9:15 a.m. with the completion of the men's heptathlon.
