Minter One Shot Off Leader in Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Junior Blaire Minter sits one stroke off of leader; Catamounts move up to third after second round play.
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Western Carolina junior Blaire Minter put together another solid second round Monday to remain in the top five to end the day jumping up two spots to now sit just one shot off of leader Sarah Bejgrowicz of Campbell University. The Catamounts are currently tied for third place with Florida International at 601 (+25) after two rounds at the par 72, Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses on Kiawah Island.
Blaire Minter began the day four back of Bejgrowicz after shooting an opening round 71 (-1). Minter began the day with straight pars through the first five holes. She recorded a bogey on the par four six, but then regained the stroke after making a birdie on the par-three seven. After the turn, Minter then recorded four birdies to finish the day with a two-under 70. She has shot 141 (-3) through two rounds.
Classmate Rachel Nelson began the day tied for fourth with an opening round 71. Monday proved to be tougher for the junior as six bogies and a double-bogey on #16 pushed her off pace from the leaders, putting her at 149 (+5). She now sits in a cluster of golfers tied for 12th.
Senior Josefine Sundh ended the day just one shot off of her opening round score of 76 (+4), to finish the day at 77 (+5), Her consistency paid off as Sundh was able to jump three spots to go into the final day tied for 34th. Malin Jansson carded a 79 for the second straight day while redshirt senior Tiffany Schisler fell four strokes off of yesterday's 86 to finish the day with a 90 (T-139).
The Catamounts (601, +25) are just behind second place Campbell University by a stroke and sit eight strokes behind the leader, the University of Miami (593, +17). Play resumes tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 8:45 to begin the final round of tournament play.
COUGARS CLIMB TO FIFTH AT EDWIN WATTS/KIAWAH ISLAND CLASSIC
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team climbed five spots to fifth place after a solid second round of play at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic held Monday afternoon at the par-72 Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses on Kiawah Island.
After finishing tied for 10th in Sunday's first round, the Cougars made a combined 11 birdies and are now 11 strokes back from current team leader Miami (Fla.) with a two-round score of 604 (+28). The defending tournament champion Hurricanes lead after two rounds with a 593 (+17) followed by Campbell (+24), No. 36-ranked Florida International (+25) and Western Carolina (+25).
Individually, sophomore Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) continues to pace CofC firing a two-round score of 148 (+4) which is tied for eighth. She is one of three Cougars in the top 25 next to sophomore Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) with a five-over par 149 which is tied for 12th and junior Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) with a seven-over par 151 which is tied for 24th.
"It was a good day today," CofC head coach Jamie Futrell said. "We played much more confident and put ourselves in a position to make a run for the championship tomorrow. I was very proud of the girls and the way they played today."
The Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic is the largest women's collegiate golf tournament in the country with 33 total schools competing including 12 of the nation's top 100-ranked teams. This is the third-consecutive year in which CofC has hosted the large-scale event.
Tournament play concludes tomorrow with an 8:45 a.m. (ET) shotgun start for the final round.

Elon Women's Golf Slips to Ninth After Two Rounds
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Elon women's golf team fired a 309 on the second day of the Edwin Watts-Kiawah Island Classic to drop to a tie for ninth out of 33 teams with a two-round score of 610. The Phoenix is just two strokes back of sixth place entering Tuesday's final round of play.
Martyna Mierzwa shot a one-over 73 on Monday and, coupled with her first-round mark of 76, sits in a tie for 12th among the 172 individual competitors. Mierzwa carded two birdies during Monday's round.
Just two shots back of Mierzwa in a tie for 24th is Virginia Mayer with a two-round score of 151 (73-78). Tara McFadden (77-78) and Shannon Prunty (75-80) are in a tie for 52nd with an overall score of 155. Rounding out Elon's field was Lauren Leback who sits in a tie for 132nd with a total of 166 (79-87).
Campbell's Sarah Bejgrowicz holds the individual lead entering Tuesday's final round with a score of 140 (69-71).
Miami (296-297--593) holds a seven-stroke edge over Campbell (299-301--600) for the team lead. Florida International and SoCon rival Western Carolina are tied for third with a mark of 601 while host and SoCon foe College of Charleston sits fifth with a score of 604.
Just ahead of the Phoenix in a tie for seventh are Central Arkansas and Nebraska who each boast a mark of 609. Elon is tied for ninth with Oral Roberts at 610.
Elon will begin play of Tuesday's final round at 9:00 a.m. at the Cougar Point course.
