SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Chattanooga's Kasey Tydingco has been selected as the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Elon's Lauren Taylor has been honored as the Pitcher of the Week for all games February 14-20. The selections are made by the league office.
Tydingco, a sophomore from Fairfield, Calif., opened the South Alabama Mardi Gras Tournament in Mobile, Ala., with her first-career grand slam to center field to give the Lady Mocs a 7-2 lead over Ohio State. She added another home run in the third game in the tournament against host South Alabama. For the weekend, the Lady Moc first baseman went 6-for-16 (.375) with eight RBI, two doubles and two home runs. Tyndingco also had 33 putouts without committing an error.
Taylor, a Lillington, N.C., native, went 2-0 last week in outings against Seton Hall and Dayton. In Elon's win over Dayton, the Phoenix pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only six hits while striking out seven. For the weekend, Taylor posted a 0.64 ERA in 11 innings, and improved her record to 4-0 on the year.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week were Appalachian State's Meghan Smith, College of Charleston's Amanda Lonergan, Elon's Tomeka Watson, UNCG's Kaitlin Merkt, Samford's Julianne Surane and Western Carolina's Kelly Braman.
Also nominated for pitcher of the week were Appalachian State's Hannah Dow, UNCG's Josie Felix, Samford's Nicole Bobrowski, Chattanooga's Michelle Fuzzard and Western Carolina's Amber Steinhardt.
