Mayer Paces Phoenix to Tie For Sixth After Day One of First Spring Event
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- On a blustery day that made for tough playing conditions, the Elon women's golf team opened its spring campaign with a solid first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on Sunday. Virginia Mayer fired a one-over 73 to pace the Phoenix (301) into a tie for sixth place among the field of 33 teams.
Mayer's individual score has her in a tie for eighth out of 172 individuals. Mayer recorded three birdies over her opening 18 holes of play on the Cougar Point course.
Shannon Prunty had a good first round as well, shooting a 75 to sit in a tie for 24th. Prunty birdied two holes on the day. In a tie for 34th was Elon's Martyna Mierzwa who carded a 76 with two birdies. Tara McFadden's 77 has her in a tie for 56th after one round of play while Lauren Leback sits in a tie for 78th with a one-round total of 79.
The individual leaderboard shows a three-way tie at the top after one round as Campbell's Sara Bejgrowicz, William & Mary's Betsy Birchall and James Madison's Mary Chamberlain all recorded a round of 69.
James Madison and Miami are tied atop the team leaderboard after both posting a first-round mark of 296. Just one stroke back is Elon's SoCon rival Western Carolina in third. Florida International (298) and Campbell (299) rate just ahead of the Phoenix and Central Arkansas who also fired a 301 on Sunday.
Wichita State (303) is in eighth followed by Jacksonville State (304) and host College of Charleston and Akron who both had scores of 305.
Fellow SoCon programs Wofford (T22nd, 321) and The Citadel (T28th, 331) are also in the field.
Round two will be played on Monday. The Phoenix will hit the Oak Point course at just after 9:30 a.m.
COUGARS TIED FOR 10TH AT EDWIN WATTS/KIAWAH ISLAND CLASSIC
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team sits in a tie for 10th after the first round of play at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic held Sunday at the par-72 Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses on Kiawah Island.
Sophomore Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) paces the Cougars with a two-over par 74 which is tied for 16th on the individual leader board. She made two first-round birdies on Hole No. 2 and No. 15 at Cougar Point, while junior Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) was even through the first eight holes and finished the day tied for 34th with a 76.
"Kathy played solid throughout the round and finished strong for us," CofC head coach Jamie Futrell said. "As a team, we made no putts today and played under tough windy conditions at Kiawah. We have to improve on that, if we expect to challenge for the championship."
The second round will begin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (ET). The top 18 teams will play at Cougar Point, while the remaining teams at Oak Point. The Cougars will continue play on Cougar Point and are paired with Nebraska and Campbell. James Madison and 2010 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic champion Miami (Fla.) currently leads the pack with a first-round 296 (+8).
The Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic is the largest women's collegiate golf tournament in the country with 33 total schools competing including 12 of the nation's top 100-ranked teams. It is the third-consecutive year in which CofC has hosted the large-scale event.

WCU Women's Golf Third after Opening Round at Kiawah Rachel Nelson, Blaire Minter tied for fourth
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Western Carolina put two golfers inside the top six on Sunday to stand third after the first of three rounds at the Kiawah Island Classic being contested amidst windy conditions between the Cougar and Oak Point Golf Courses.
Catamount juniors Blaire Minter and Rachel Nelson both carded opening rounds of one-under 71 to stand tied for fourth entering Monday's second round which opens at 9:30 am.
James Madison and Miami (Fla.) stand tied atop the leader board at 296 just one-stroke ahead of WCU (297), with Florida International and Elon tied for fourth to round out the top five of the 33-team field. Three players stand tied for first place as Betsy Birchall of William & Mary, Sarah Bejgrowsicz from Campbell and James Madison's Mary Chamberlain each carded opening rounds of three-under, 69 - two strokes ahead of the three-way tie for fourth.
Minter was as low as two-under through the first three holes on Sunday, making the turn at even-par where she played until the final hole. She birdied the par-4 18th to advance into a tie for fourth. Her classmate, Nelson, moved to three-under par through the first eight holes before a double-bogey on the ninth dropped her back to one-under at the turn. The West Chester, Ohio, native carded birdies on two of the first four holes on the back nine before a double-bogey on the par-3 No. 14 moved her back to one-under and a bogey on No. 18 leaving her one-under, 71, on the day.
Senior Josefine Sundh had four bogies to shoot four-over 76 on Sunday, tied for 34th after the first round. Malin Jansson struggled over the final six holes, dropping from even-par to seven-over to card an opening round 79 to stand tied for 79th while redshirt senior Tiffany Schisler standing tied for 138th (86) after the opening 18.
