Wofford 6, Presbyterian 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team dominated the courts at Reeves Tennis Center Friday afternoon after allowing Presbyterian College just one singles win. The Terriers beat the Blue Hose 6-1, while Julia Paulson improved her singles win streak to five and Emilia Milovanovic grabbed her sixth singles win of the season. The victory gives the Terriers a 5-2 record and the loss drops the Blue Hose to 5-2.

Coach Hangstefer's squad grabbed the early 1-0 advantage after winning every doubles match and earning the doubles point. Haley Baird and Guinn Garcia defeated Christina Limantoro and Paige Oelke 8-6 at the No. 1 position. Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans swept past Cara Caruso and Courtney Gardner with an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 spot and Emilia "Frenchie" Milovanovic and Samantha Sullivan beat Patricia Alves and Lindsay Krause at the No. 3 slot. Baird and Garcia lead the team as a pair in doubles wins with five and Evans individually has six doubles wins with two different partners.

Milovanovic was first off the courts in singles, grabbing her sixth singles win of the season after defeating Limantoro at the No. 1 spot. Baird quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Caruso at No. 3 and Evans sealed the victory for the Terriers at the No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Alves. Evans has five singles wins on the season, tying her for second with Garcia and Paulson for singles wins on the year.

Paulson pushed past Gardiner at the No. 5 spot after taking her match to a super tie-breaker, winning 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Stephanie Cox also took her match to a super tie-breaker, but came up short after a close finish against Krause, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8. Garcia was last off the courts after defeating Oelke in straight sets, 6-2, 6-5.

"The girls played really well today. They came out focused and hungry for a win. Presbyterian put up a great fight and really made us work to get the win today," commented Coach Hangstefer after the match. The win keeps Wofford undefeated against Presbyterian College in women's tennis history. The Terriers are winning the overall series 4-0.

The Terriers next match will be at UNC Charlotte, February 24th. Wofford is set to take on the 49ers at 2:30 pm.


Elon 5, Charlotte 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Elon women's tennis squad picked up a 5-2 non-league victory over the Charlotte 49ers thanks to winning the doubles point and claiming decisions at each of the top four singles positions.  The win evened Elon's season record at 3-3 while Charlotte fell to 5-3.

The Phoenix won at both number two and three singles by identical 8-4 scores to take the early 1-0 lead.  At number two, Elon's Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury defeated Charlotte's Gabi Vergara and Anna Ekelund while the Phoenix pair of Briana Berne and Andrea Pont Grau knocked off Ginny Johnson and Alexandra Zinn at number three. 

The 49ers top pair defeated Elon's number one doubles team of Jordan Johnston and Viviana Stavreva by an 8-5 score.

Three of the six singles matches lasted three sets with Elon winning at number one where Johnston held off Zinn 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.  Elon's Berne fell to Iveta Guneva at the number five position by a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 score.  At number six, Charlotte's Iveta Guneva defeated Pont Grau 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Jansaker was a winner for the Phoenix at number two, handing Andrea Rivera a 7-5, 6-3 defeat.  At the third position, Khoury upended Gabi Vergara in straight sets - 6-3, 6-3.  Stavreva also won a 6-3, 6-3 bout over Charlotte's Emmanuelle Briant at number four.

The Phoenix women will we right back in action tomorrow afternoon with a noon meeting at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.


Davidson 7, USC Upstate 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team snapped their five-match losing streak with an impressive 7-0 blanking of visiting USC Upstate on Friday afternoon at the Convington Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (4-6), playing on their outdoor courts for the first time this year, rolled to its fourth win at home and picked up their second 7-0 victory of the season. The Spartans remained winless at 0-5 as they played the second of three matches this week.

USC Upstate had to forfeit two of the singles spots and a doubles spot, giving Davidson an early 3-0 lead after it capped the doubles point.

After a close match at No. 1 doubles, in which Alison Rauh and Brite Moniz-Soares took an 8-6 win, Davidson cruised at the No. 2 spot. Samantha Galainena and Stephani Synn blanked the Spartans 8-0 for their first win together as a doubles pair.

Much was the same then in singles action with Galainena picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, while Synn picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 to snap a seven-match skid

Moniz-Soares shutout her opponent at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0) for her team-best sixth singles win of the season and Rauh took care of Ana-Sofia Camberos at No. 2 in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-6 for the Wildcats last point. Rauh improved to 3-6 in singles play.


Winthrop 6, Furman 1

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Winthrop handed Furman a 6-1 loss Friday evening in women's tennis action at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.  Paladin senior Monica Arguello, ranked 64th nationally, defeated Elizabeth Zaytseva, 6-1, 6-3, at number one singles to score Furman's lone point. 

In doubles action, Furman freshman Margaret Boyette teamed with sophomore Lauren Kline to record an 8-6 win over Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson in the number one match.  The Eagles countered with wins at two and three to take the doubles point.  At number two doubles, Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portiolo defeated freshmen Amanda Murray and Katherine Oudin, 8-3.  Elizaveta Zaytseva and Andressa Garcia battled to a close 9-7 win over Arguello and sophomore Michele Stanford in the third doubles match.

Furman recorded several close sets in singles play.  Alkema defeated Kline, 7-5, 6-1 in the second singles match, while Herrera notched a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Oudin at number three singles.  Boyette forced a tiebreaker in the first set against Portiolo at number four singles, but Portiolo came away with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win.  Garcia defeated Murray 7-5, 6-4, and Sara Abutovic posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Stanford in the sixth singles spot.

The Paladins (1-3) will return to action Sunday to face Tulane at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
