Elon's Women's Cross Country Named a USTFCCA All-Academic Team
NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association announced today that the Elon women's cross country team has earned 2010 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status.
The Elon women earned a 3.60 GPA this past fall and hold the highest GPA among the Southern Conference women's cross country programs. Elon is one of nine SoCon schools to receive the honor this year. Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, Wofford and Furman were also selected as all-academic teams.
A total of 192 Division I programs earned All-Academic Cross Country status. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic team, the team must have had a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and started at least five at its respective NCAA regional championship.
Elon Men's Cross Country Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Team
NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association announced today that the Elon men's cross country team has earned Division 1 All-Academic Cross Country status. It marks the sixth time that the Phoenix squad has been named an all-academic team by the USTFCCCA.
The men posted a fall 2010 GPA of 3.13 and are one of eight Southern Conference to receive the honor. Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Davidson, Furman, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga and Western Carolina were also selected as all-academic teams.
With the Elon women's team receiving all-academic team honors yesterday, the Elon cross country program is one of seven schools in the SoCon to have both teams earn all-academic status. This is the sixth time that both Phoenix squads have earned the honor.
A total of 152 Division I programs earned All-Academic Cross Country Team status. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic team, the team must have had a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and started at least five at its respective NCAA regional championship.
UNCG, Schnell Named USTFCCCA All-Academic
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The UNCG men's and women's cross country teams were honored this week as they both earned All-Academic team honors, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced this week. Junior Ashley Schnell also claimed All-Academic Cross Country status as an individual.
Schnell was one of just 99 female student-athletes from around the nation to earn All-Academic Cross Country honors. In order to qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have complied a GPA of 3.25 or high and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
Schnell, an accomplished violinist, completed those requirements as she holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in music with a concentration in instrumental performance. She also became the first-ever Spartan to earn All-Region honors after finishing in 14th place at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Nov. 13.
The men's team was one of 152 teams in the nation to claim All-Academic Cross Country Team honors after the team had a cumulative GPA of 3.36. The women's team wasn't far behind as they had a 3.31 GPA and was one of 192 teams recognized.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five regional at their respective NCAA regional championship.
On the men's side, Florida State was named the Cross Country Men's Scholar Team of the Year after finishing as runner-up at the national championships this past season and having a 3.11 team GPA.
Villanova was named the Cross Country Women's Scholar Team of the Year for the second-straight season. The two-time defending National Champions had a cumulative 3.38 GPA.
Furman Cross Country Teams Earn All-Academic Status
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams earned 2010 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status as announced Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five regional at their respective NCAA regional championship.
The Paladin women's team posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.33, while the men's team has a cumulative team GPA of 3.14.
Chattanooga Cross Country Teams Named USTFCCCA All-Academic
CHATTANOOGA Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams received All-Academic Honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week.
The Mocs, with a team GPA of 3.46, ranked 15th among all NCAA Division I schools and posted the highest GPA of the eight Southern Conference schools represented on the list that included UNCG, Davidson, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Furman, Elon and Appalachian State.
A total of 152 institutions represent 31 conferences that compose the group. The Big 12 led all conferences with 10 members earning All-Academic honors and was followed by the Big East which had nine listed.
Mississippi Valley State reported the highest cumulative GPA among All-Academic honorees with a 3.62. Southern Illinois followed with a 3.60.
On the women's side, the Lady Mocs posted a team GPA of 3.59, ranking 22nd among all NCAA Division I schools and second highest GPA of the nine Southern Conference schools represented on the list that included Elon, Wofford, Samford, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Furman and UNCG.
A total of 192 institutions represent 30 conferences that compose the group. The Big East led all conferences with 12 members earning All-Academic honors and was followed by the Big 12 and Big Ten who each placed 11 on the list.
Alabama reported the highest cumulative GPA among All-Academic honorees with a 3.88. Arkansas State and Missouri State were next in the category at 3.70.

Davidson Men's Cross Country Earns 13th Consecutive All-Academic Team Honor
NEW ORLEANS - The Davidson men's cross country team was designated as an USTFCCCA All-Academic Team for the 13th consecutive year in an announcement by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Thursday.
With a team grade point average of 3.31, Davidson was one of 152 Division I teams to earn the honor. A total of 31 conferences were represented, with the Big 12 leading all conferences with 10 members earning All-Academic honors.
Mississippi Valley State reported the highest cumulative GPA among All-Academic honorees with a 3.62. Southern Illinois followed with a 3.60.
The Wildcats were one of eight Southern Conference squads to earn the national award, which is given to teams who have competed and compiled a score at an NCAA Regional Meet, and have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
In 2010, junior Ryan Hopkins led Davidson through another strong season in which the 'Cats placed third at the Southern Conference Championship. Hopkins twice broke the school's 8K course record and was named to the All-SoCon first team.
Florida State was the 2010 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Men's Cross Country Scholar Team of the Year. The Scholar Team of the Year distinction goes to the program thatearned All-Academic Team honors and placed the highest among the field at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
