SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State sophomore Chris Moen and junior Darius Purcell have been named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets during the weekend of Feb. 11 through Feb. 13. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Moen, a sophomore from Rockville, Md., placed second in the 3000 meters at the Akron Invitational. Moen's time of 8:05.88 broke the Appalachian State record by 16 seconds. He currently leads the conference in the event by 19 seconds, while ranking second in the 800 meters and third in the mile.
Purcell, a Fayetteville, N.C., native, placed second in the high jump at the Akron Invitational with a leap of 6-10 ¾.
Appalachian State returns action this weekend when it hosts the Appalachian Pre-Conference meet in Boone, N.C.
Other top performers this week included:
Furman junior Lee Gilmer - Broke the Furman 800 meters record at the Tiger Paw Invitational with a time of 1:53.00.
Western Carolina sophomore Brandon Hairston - Won the 200 meters at the Tiger Paw Invitational with a time of 22.12, and ran a personal-best 6.92 in the 60 meters dash at the same event.
