SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG guard Amanda Leigh has been named the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the week for all games played February 8-14.
The senior from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 21.0 points per game over the week as the Spartans went 2-0 with wins over Elon and College of Charleston. Against the Phoenix, Leigh scored 12 first-half points while shooting 4-for-4 from behind the arc, helping UNCG avenge its last-second loss to Elon earlier in the season. Leigh's strong play continued in the next game against the Cougars, as she helped the Spartans erase a 10-point second-half deficit by scoring 30 points after intermission. Leigh scored 16 straight UNCG points to tie the game in regulation, and she sparked the Spartans' 14-0 run at the start of overtime by scoring nine points in the extra period.
Leigh set a Fleming Gym scoring record for a UNCG player with her 30-point performance against the College of Charleston. The Spartan senior also became the first UNCG player to hit the 30-point mark in nearly 11 year.
UNCG finishes out its season at Fleming Gym this week when it welcomes Chattanooga on Saturday and Samford on Monday evening.
Other top performers in the week of play were Appalachian State's Sam Ramirez, Chattanooga's Bailey Dewart, Davidson's Sophia Aleksandravicius, Elon's Ali Ford, Georgia Southern's Logan Youngblood, Samford's Emily London, Western Carolina's Rena Wakama and Wofford's Mahagony Williams.
