BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's tennis team continued its dominating play at home this season as the Bulldogs registered a pair of 7-0 decisions against both UNC Asheville and Gadsden State on Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the doubleheader sweep, Samford (4-1) improved to 4-0 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs have not relinquished a point at the Samford Tennis Center in 2011 and have outscored their opponents by a total of 28-0.
In their first match of the day, the Bulldogs cruised to a 7-0 triumph against UNC Asheville (1-3). Samford won the doubles point and then received singles victories from Carson Kadi, Zac Dunkle, Carl Abalos, Oliver Reynolds, Fernando Costa and Alexander Sajonz.
The Bulldogs' doubles teams comprised of Reynolds and Abalos earned an 8-1 win on court No. 1, while Samford's pairing of Dunkle and Sajonz outlasted UNC Asheville's tandem of Nicola Nonnenbroich and Nathan White, 8-6, in the No. 2 doubles competition. With the Bulldogs' wins on the top two doubles courts, Samford took an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
Against UNC Asheville, the Bulldogs earned straight-set victories in singles play from Dunkle, Abalos, Reynolds, Costa and Sajonz.
In the No. 1 singles contest, Samford's Kadi outlasted UNC Asheville's Nonnenbroich in a three-set marathon 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.
The Bulldogs concluded Sunday's doubleheader with a 7-0 victory against Gadsden State (0-2). Samford swept the doubles point and then registered singles wins from Scott Foster, Garrison LaDuca, Ryan Shidler, Michael Browder, Joe Hunsicker and Mark Lange.
All six of the Bulldogs' singles victories occurred in straight sets, except on court No. 6 where Samford's Lange won via walkover. Gadsden State's Daniel Little injured himself in doubles play and was not able to compete in the singles competition.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' combination of Shidler and Hunsicker earned a victory on court No. 1, while Samford's pairing of Browder and Lange tallied an 8-4 win on court No. 2. In the No. 3 doubles match, the Bulldogs' tandem of Kelwin DeWet and Costa cruised to an 8-1 victory against Gadsden State's combination of Demetrious Thompson and Brandon Terrell.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at noon against the Belmont Bruins. The contest will be the Bulldogs' fourth straight home match and will be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
Georgia Southern 6, Hampton 1
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team (3-2) started the day winning the doubles point over Hampton (1-2) and cruised to a final score of 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The victory kept the Eagles undefeated at home.
The Eagles triumphed over the Pirates for the fourth consecutive season, but it was the first win over Hampton for first-year Head Coach Nick Zieziula.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point with wins at the top two seeds. Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam defeated Hampton's Jung-Ho Oh and Kenneth Greene, 8-1, to improve to 4-1 on the season at number-one singles. At the No. 2 seed, Alain Garrido and Marco Osorio posted an 8-1 win over Alvin Fludd and Edson Alves to remain perfect with a 4-0 mark.
In a close match, Mark Paetz and Edio Castanhel fell to Hampton's Gellert Varga and Marcelo Reda, 8-6, in number-three doubles.
Georgia Southern's Puigventos moved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Varga at number-one singles. Osorio picked up the first win of the day in singles action with straight sets of 6-1, 6-1, over Hampton's No. 4 Fludd. Garrido followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Greene at the number-two seed.
Verdam went 6-3, 6-1 in singles play against Jung-Ho Oh and picked up his fourth victory against only one loss for 2011. Sebastien Felt fell early in the first set to Pirate Edson Alves, 4-6, before he tallied the 6-3 comeback win in the second set. Felt won the third and deciding set, 10-4. In the final match of the day, Derrick Davidson battled Hampton's Reda, but fell 5-7, 4-6.
"I thought that Sebastien Felt coming in and getting his first team victory was very notable," said Eagle Head Coach Zieziula. "He got behind today, but he did a terrific job by sticking with the game plan, attacking the net and he got the victory."
The Eagles will be on the road for their next three matches against South Carolina State, North Florida and Mercer before returning home Sunday, February 27th, to face Florida A&M.
Appalachian State 7, Lees-McRae 0
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis moved to .500 on the season Sunday night, as the Apps downed Lees-McRae 7-0. The Mountaineers (2-2) have now shutout the Bobcats (1-1) the past four seasons.
The Mountaineers dominated the whole day, and it only lost one match, which came in doubles action.
The duo of Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc defeated Alexander Hayes and Skylar Warren 8-4 while Alex Markov and Sebastien King cruised past their opponents to win 8-3 at the number two spot.
Ezekiel Sansing and Andrew McKinnon dropped the Black and Gold's lone match at the No. 3 pairing, 8-6.
ASU continued with its impressive play, as it went spotless in singles action.
Markov was victorious at the number one spot, winning 6-4, 6-2 and Humblet downed Travis Van Hoy in two sets as well at the number two position. Kloc and King kept up the Apps dominance, as each notched wins at the three and four spots, while McKinnon and Matt Saltsgaver both ran through their opponents as well in two sets at the five and six positions.
Appalachian looks to carry its momentum into a huge rivalry match-up with East Carolina on Sunday, February 20 at noon in Greenville, N.C.
Coastal Carolina 6, Wofford 1
CONWAY, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team traveled Coastal Carolina Sunday for their third away match of the season. Alan Donald fought hard for a singles win, but the Chanticleers earned a 6-1 victory after winning the rest of the singles matches and winning the doubles point. The Terriers drop to 1-4 on the season and Coastal Carolina stays unbeaten with a 4-0 record.
After coming off the courts with the all three doubles match wins, the Chanticleers put up an early 1-0 lead.
Alan Donald posted the lone point of the day for the Terriers with a fiercely competitive singles finish. Donald played Alex Funkhouser at the No. 4 position and split the first two sets at 7-5 apiece. The tie-breaker proved to be a fight as well, finishing 11-9. The victory gives Donald his second singles match win in a row.
Drew Superstein's match finished in a dog fight as well after splitting the first two sets against Dorian Sovic at the No. 5 spot. Sovic barely edged out Superstein in the third set for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) win.
The Chanticleers were able to win the rest of the singles matches in straight sets, giving them the 6-1 win.
Wofford will return to the road February 17th against Presbyterian College. The match is set to start at 2:30 pm in Clinton, South Carolina.
DePaul 5, Furman 2
Brevard College 4, Furman 3
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- #66 DePaul defeated the Furman men's tennis team 5-2 Sunday morning in the Paladins' home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Furman jumped out to an early lead after winning the doubles point. Senior Sawyer Duncan and sophomore Andrew Mellow combined for an 8-6 win over George Chanturia and Matija Palinic at number one doubles, and freshmen Alex Christ and Joel Cook teamed up for an 8-2 win over Mathias Hambach and Bartosz Joswiak in the number two doubles match. DePaul took the win in the third doubles match, with Filip Dzanko and Ben Hartman posting an 8-1 win over freshman Marco Aru and sophomore Bobby Browning.
In singles action, the Paladins came away with just one win, with Christ beating Palinic 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match. Sven Kasper defeated Duncan 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles, while Chanturia beat Mellow 6-2, 7-5 at number three. In the fourth singles match, Jozwiak handed sophomore Robbie Arun a 6-2, 6-3 loss, while Dzanko defeated Cook 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth singles match. At number six singles, Hartman and senior Watson George split sets, with George winning the first set 7-6, before Hartman won the final sets 6-2, 6-3.
In the afternoon match, Brevard defeated Furman, 4-3. The Tornados won the doubles point with wins at number one and two doubles. The Paladins picked up a win at number three doubles, with freshmen Josh Richmond and Austin Hooker defeating Shane Apps and Jarred Fisher 8-3.
The Paladins posted three singles wins, with Cook defeating Cole Altizer 6-4, 6-4 at number two singles, and freshman Nate Collins recording a 7-6, 6-2 win over Fisher in the fifth singles match. At number six singles, Robbie Aru defeated Apps, 6-0, 6-2.
Furman (0-7) will play at #51 Clemson Friday at 2 p.m.
Clemson 7, College of Charleston 0
CLEMSON, S.C. - No. 51-ranked Clemson defeated the College of Charleston men's tennis team, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
The Cougars (1-1) made the Tigers (8-2) earn each point extending two singles matches into three sets at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions and won one of three doubles matches on the day.
Junior Tom Delme and sophomore Stephen Hardy, a transfer from James Madison, topped Clemson's Cal Hilsman and Robert Pietrucha, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles, to improve to an undefeated 2-0 on the season with a doubles victory over Gardner-Webb in the team's spring season opener on Jan. 30.
The Cougars will return to action with a pair of road matches at UNC Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C., and Winston-Salem State in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. (ET) and 2:30 p.m. (ET) respectively.
Georgia State 6, Chattanooga 1
ATLANTA, Ga. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match at Georgia State this afternoon. Sophomore Jackson Tresnan scored the lone point for the Mocs (1-6) with his win at No. 4 singles.
The Panthers (7-3) took the opening doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Tresnan and fellow sophomore Stephen Crofford pushed their No. 2 bout with Trent Spinks and Vincent Verpeaux to a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (7-3).
Five the six matches were decided in straight sets. Sophomore Roberto Vieira and Gabe Townes' No. 1 sinlges match was the only one to need a third set. Vieira won the first 6-3 before falling 6-0 in the second. Townes took the third 6-3 to win the point.
Tresnan defeated Juan Pablo Gutierrez 7-5, 6-1 to avoid the shutout. He is now 3-0 when playing No. 4 this season.
Chattanooga is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 20, hosting Jacksonville State. Match time is set for 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) on the UTC Tennis Courts.
