Georgia Southern 7, Hampton 0
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (2-0) shutout Hampton (1-2) with a 7-0 win at the Hanner Tennis Complex on Sunday, February 13th. The early-morning win marks the first time the Eagles competed at all six singles and three doubles spots.
Senior Ali Beavers started the Eagles off with a quick win in straight sets over Hampton's Barenese Myers 6-0, 6-1 at number-two singles. Head Coach Amy Bonner complimented the Eagle senior in an interview after the match.
"It's great to see a senior in her final year start out with such a great match today and two great matches so far this season," said Bonner. "She is someone we can always count on for leadership on and off the court and she really played well today in both singles and doubles. She is a class act."
At number-one singles, Paola Garrido topped Tabita Daoli in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, after Alessanra Dzuba defeated Renee Henry 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 6. position. Sophomore Allison Beeler had a close first set with Hampton's Danielle Butler in the fifth singles spot, but came out strong in the second for a 7-5, 6-1 win.
Ashley Hungerford, a senior from Clearwater, Fla., recorded her second dual match win of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maria Ycaza at number-three singles. Senior Melanie Rolle completed the Eagles' scoring at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 duplicate set triumph over Calisia Reid.
"We fought hard and never let up," Bonner said. "I'm just really proud of them today," Bonner said.
The Eagles claimed the doubles point as Garrido and Beavers teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the 8-1 win over the Lady Pirates' Myers and Daolio. Hungerford and Mimi Bollaci defeated Calisia Reid and Maria Ycaza at the number-two seed, 8-3. Rolle and Taylor Jones beat Henry and Butler, 8-3 for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern will hit the road to play three teams in the Atlanta-area next weekend with Kennesaw State and Savannah State on deck for Saturday, February 19th and Georgia State the following day. The Eagles play five matches on the road before a return home for non-conference play March 9th and 10th against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson, respectively.
Boston 7, Davidson 0
BOSTON, Mass. - Davidson concluded its Northeast trip and first two road matches of the year with a 7-0 defeat at Boston on Sunday morning at the Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University.
The Wildcats (3-6) were unable to halt their four-match skid as they went 0-2 on their trip up to the Northeast after falling to Harvard on Saturday. Boston won its fourth straight to improve to 4-2 on the season and ran its all-time mark against Davidson to 4-1.
Davidson fell behind 1-0 after dropping all three doubles matches. Alison Rauh and Brites Moniz-Soares came close to scoring a win as they scored victories in five games, but fell 8-5 at No. 2 to Jessi Linero and Leonie Athanasiadis.
The Terriers sealed the win by sweeping past the Wildcats in singles action, taking all six spots in straight sets. Nisha Crouser gave Monika Mical a run at No. 3, falling 6-4, 6-4, while Moniz-Soares also played well, but came up short in her 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Petra Santini at No. 4.
The 'Cats return home, where they are 3-4, to play USC Upstate on Friday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.
Wofford at Colorado Springs, Colo.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The women's tennis program returns from a three day stay in Colorado with a 2-1 record, beating Colorado State and South Dakota and losing to the Air Force Academy. The Colorado State and Air Force matches proved to be very close and competitive matches, with the Terriers toppling Colorado State 5-2, but getting edged out by Air Force, 2-5. Wofford dominated Sunday's match against South Dakota, 7-0. Coach Katie Hangstefer's team improves to 4-2 on the year and the Terriers stay unbeaten in neutral sites, going 2-0. All of the matches were played in the Air Force Academy's Indoor Arena.
Colorado State
Wofford began the weekend at 8:00 a.m., Saturday morning, against the Colorado State Rams. The Terriers earned the first point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Haley Baird and Guinn Garcia were the first off the courts with an 8-6 win over Caitlin Fluegge and Veronika Wojakowska. After Stephanie Cox and Emilia "Frenchie" Milovanovic lost to Tori Arneson and Melissa Holzinger 8-5, it was up to Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson as they finished a tight match against Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz. Their match came down to a tie-breaker, and the Terriers pushed through for a 9-8 (4) win.
Milovanovic coasted through her match at the No. 1 spot in singles, beating Fluegge 6-2, 6-4. Garcia split her first two sets against Arneson at the No. 2 position, but was able to capitalize on the third set, winning 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Evans defeated Holzinger 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 4 slot, and Paulson was able to seal the win for the Terriers in a competitive match against Wojakowska. Her match was taken to a tie-breaker and the freshman was able to beat the Ram, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, giving the win to the Terriers.
Air Force
Wofford played their second match of the day against the Air Force Academy. The Terriers played close across the board, but the Falcons finished the match with a 5-2 win. The Air Force gained a one point advantage in doubles after winning two of the doubles matches. Evans and Paulson did win their doubles match, 8-6, against Anastasia Hueffner and Christen Monreal. The duo went undefeated on the weekend as a doubles pair, combining for a 2-0 record.
The Terriers two singles points came from the No. 5 and 6 spots. Paulson earned her second singles win of the day in another competitive finish against Hueffner. Paulson swept by Heffner in the first set and after a fire-fight, lost the second set. Paulson was able to dig for the tie-breaker, winning her match 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8. Cox beat her opponent in a tight match as well. After losing the first set to Megumi Voight 6-0, the sophomore regained her composure and won the second set (7-5) and tie-breaker (10-8).
South Dakota
The Terriers finished their stay in Colorado with a strong win against South Dakota Sunday morning. Wofford dominated the match, finishing 7-0. Coach Hangstefer's team won each singles and doubles match. After earning the doubles point with three straight doubles wins, the Terriers continued the winning trend in singles.
The Terriers won each singles match in straight sets. Evans was first off the courts after only allowing her opponent, Ysabel Nunez only two games (6-1, 6-1). Baird earned her first win of the weekend, defeating Shadi Soleymani 6-2, 6-1 and Milovanovic beat her opponent 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. Garcia battled past her competitor, Veronika Makashov for a 6-2, 6-3 win and Paulson defeated Marina Kiefer 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. Cox finished the Terriers final match in Colorado with a 6-0, 6-4 win against Maddy Warder.
At the end of the weekend, Paulson finished with the best results for the Terriers, staying unbeaten at the No. 5 slot (3-0). Paulson has won the past four straight singles matches, putting her tied at second on the team in singles wins (4). Milovanovic's two wins at the No. 1 spot puts her at a team-high five wins in singles matches on the season. With two wins each during the weekend, Garcia and Evans are tied with Paulson at second on the team with singles wins (4). Baird and Garcia won two matches as a pair in doubles and lead the team in doubles wins with four.
The Terriers' next match will be back home in Reeves Tennis Center against Presbyterian College. The match will begin Friday, February 18th at 2:00 p.m.
Alabama 7, Chattanooga 0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team lost a 7-0 match at Alabama today. The Lady Mocs drop to 1-2 on the year while the 42nd-ranked Crimson Tide improved to 5-1.
Chattanooga was swept in the doubles matches, only winning one game in the three contests. The Lady Mocs were able to be competitive in a pair of singles, despite being swept on the day.
Sophomore Jenna Nurik lost to No. 63 Alexa Guarachi at No. 1. Nurik got behind 6-4, but battled in the second set. She forced a tiebreaker before losing 7-6 (7-3).
Freshman Alexa Flynn forced a third set in her match with Alex Clay at No. 3. Flynn lost the first set 6-3, but came back to take the third 3-6. They played a pro set to decide the match with Clay winning 10-0.
The Lady Mocs return home for a pair of matches this weekend. UTC hosts Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 11:00 a.m. and Jacksonville State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches are scheduled for the UTC Tennis Courts.
