Appalachian State 6, UNC Asheville 1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis dropped UNC Asheville 6-1 in a non-conference match in Asheville Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers, who improved to 4-2 on the year, swept the doubles matches to win the doubles point.

Ellie Linsell and Jessica Thaggard won a tight match at the No. 1 slot, 9-7 while Blakeley Bean and Gisela Fernandez won at No. 2, 8-6.  Jennifer Ansari and Keim-Lea Dinh completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 position.

At No.1 singles, Linsell won a three-set battle against Britney Cloer, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Ansari won her fourth singles match of the season since Devon Cavanaugh had to retire due to injury at the No. 2 slot.

The Bulldogs (2-3) lone point came at the No. 3 singles, as Stephanie Schon defeated Thaggard 6-0, 6-2.

Bean came from behind to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in her match at No. 4 singles against Zoe Hamel while Dinh won in two seven-point sets against Jackie McGuirk, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Fernandez claimed the last point for the Black and Gold as she won by default.

The Mountaineers are back on the courts Saturday when they travel to Presbyterian.


Elon 5, Radford 2

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix women's tennis team evened out its record at 2-2 on the year after racing to a 5-2 non-league victory over the visiting Radford Highlanders from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Radford (0-3) took an early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles points with decisions at numbers two and three. 
The Highlanders saw Petra Dajevic and Emerald Lauzon pick up a 9-8 (7-4) victory over Elon's Frida Jansaker and Bryn Khoury at number two.  Radford's Mia Drobnjak and Sara Tegner's 8-4 margin at number three over Viviana Stavreva and Andrea Pont Grau aided in the Highlanders claiming the doubles point.

Elon's top pair of Jordan Johnston and Briana Berne claimed an 8-3 win over Radford's Ivana Tomaic and Mirna Matic at number one.

Elon won at each of the top five positions of singles play, and did so in impressive fashion as the Phoenix players dropped only one set.

At number one, Johnston rolled past Dajevic 6-0, 6-1 while Elon's Jansaker earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Drobnjak at number two.  The Phoenix grabbed another point at number three where Khoury knocked off Tomaic by a 6-4, 6-1 margin.  Stavreva then took a 7-5, 6-3 match over Tegner at number four.

In one of two three-set matches, Elon's Berne outlasted Radford's Matic 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. 

Radford's lone singles victory came at number six where Lauzon defeated Jessica Margolis 6-2, 5-7, 10-3.

The Phoenix will begin a three-match road swing on Tuesday when it visits UNC Wilmington for a 1:30 p.m. contest.


Samford 5, Charlotte 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- For the second straight year, the Samford University women's tennis team earned a key early-season non-conference victory against the Charlotte 49ers. The Bulldogs' 2011 triumph occurred Saturday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex as they registered a 5-2 win to remain undefeated this season.

Samford (2-0) tallied its first road victory of the year and will continue its road swing with an in-state battle at Jacksonville State on Wednesday.

Charlotte (3-2) suffered its second straight loss of the season. After opening the 2011 campaign with consecutive victories against Radford 6-1, North Carolina Central 6-1 and Winston-Salem State 7-0, the 49ers have dropped back-to-back matches versus Gardner-Webb 5-2 and Samford 5-2.

The Bulldogs rallied to win Saturday's doubles point and then received singles victories from Taylor Morgan, Madelie Janse Van Rensburg, Kristin Lewis and Rebecca Kirven to tally the 5-2 non-conference triumph.

In the key doubles competition, Samford's combination of Andrie Meiring and Kirven recorded an 8-3 victory over Charlotte's duo of Anna Ekelund and Gabi Vergara on court No. 2, while the Bulldogs' pairing of Janse Van Rensburg and Lewis topped the 49ers' tandem of Emmanuelle Briant and Iveta Guneva, 8-3, in the No. 3 contest.

Samford was victorious in singles play on courts No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. Morgan, the Bulldogs' talented senior from Jacksonville, Fla., cruised to a straight-set victory in the No. 1 matchup, 6-4, 6-4, while Janse Van Rensburg breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win on court No. 3.

In the No. 4 singles competition, Samford's Lewis tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Charlotte's Briant. The Bulldogs' Kirven also earned a straight-set win in singles play by defeating the 49ers' Ekelund, 6-2, 6-3, on court No. 5.

The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs continue their two-match road trip against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.


Brown 6, Davidson 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Playing for the first time this year on the road, the Davidson women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match at Brown on Saturday afternoon.

Davidson dropped its fourth straight match to fall to 3-5 on the year, while Brown, now 2-0 vs. the Wildcats in the all-time series, improved to 2-4.

The Bears' Bianca Aboubakare guiding Brown to the win with a record-breaking performance. She scored wins in both singles and doubles to set the school's career singles wins record and also tied the career doubles wins mark. She already is Brown's career combined wins record holder (157).

Davidson fell behind 1-0 in the match after dropping all three doubles matches. The Wildcats scored just a total five games in the three matches.

Freshman Brites Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) scored the Wildcats' lone team point with a straight set 6-2, 6-4 win over Julie Flanzer at No. 4. She ran her singles mark to a team-best 5-3 and is 4-2 when playing at the No. 4 position.
