UNCG Breaks More School Records at Tiger Paw Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. - Shannon Hall and Kelly Montague each bested the previous school record in the 1,000 meters, while Joey Thompson turned in a top-10 finish in the mile on day one at the Tiger Paw Invitational inside the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Hall completed the 1,000 meter course in a time of 3:08.47, which bested teammate Michelle Chewens' school record by .88 seconds that was set in 2008. Montague also finished ahead of Chewens' time by .32 seconds with a time of 3:09.03 in the 1,000 meter race.

In the mile race, Kerry Hartman ran a time of 5:06.13 to finish in eighth place. Her time was second all-time in school history behind teammate Ashley Schnell who ran a 5:00.68 at the Liberty Open two weeks ago. Shaina Sumney was right behind her in 11th place as she ran a time of 5:08.00, which was the third-best time in school history.

"I'm very happy with the way things went today," said coach Linh Nguyen. "Shannon and Kelly both ran very well in the 1000m, besting the old school record. Kerry and Shaina ran great in the mile despite being stuck in a slower heat. Their times are No. 2 and No. 3 all-time.

On the men's side, Joey Thompson came in ninth place in the mile in a time of 4:21.25, which was 11 seconds off his own school record. Jermaine Coore was right behind him in 11th place with a time of 4:21.58.

In the 1,000 meters, Parker Wenos finished in 10th place in a time of 2:36.80. His time was the fourth-fastest in school history.

Joey and Jermaine had the same problem of getting into a slow heat, but ran well at the front," said coach Nguyen. "Hopefully we'll build on this tomorrow."

The Spartans will wrap up their stay at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday with action beginning at 9:30 a.m.
