CLEMSON, S.C. - The ninth-ranked Clemson women's tennis team defeated Furman 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C. Paladin sophomore Michele Stanford posted a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 win over Laurianne Henry at number six singles to score for Furman.
The Paladins forced many close matches, with tie-breakers needed in both the fifth and sixth singles matches. In the fifth singles match, Caroline Magnusson defeated Paladin freshman Amanda Murray 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.
At number one singles, 12th-ranked Josipa Bek defeated #69 Monica Arguello 7-5, 6-4, and 48th-ranked Keri Wong beat sophomore Lauren Kline, 6-1, 6-2, in the second singles match. Nelly Ciolkowski won a tight 6-4, 7-5 match over freshman Katherine Oudin at number three singles, and Klara Vyskocilova defeated freshman Margaret Boyette, 6-4, 6-4, in a close match at number four.
The Tigers (8-0) swept the doubles matches to win the doubles point. #2 Bek and Wong defeated Boyette and Kline, 8-5, at number one doubles, and Ciolkowski and Magnusson beat Murray and Oudin, 8-3, in the second doubles match. The Paladins also forced a close contest at number three doubles, with Maria Belaya and Vyskocilova defeating Arguello and Stanford in a tie-breaker 8-7(5).
Furman (1-2) will return home to face Winthrop on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center
