ASU?s Powell Named Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State senior Chip Powell has been named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competitions from November 30 - December 6.

Powell earned a pair of dual-meet wins last week as Appalachian State squared off against No. 14 Virginia Tech and SoCon newcomer Gardner-Webb.

On Thursday, Powell earned a first-period pin (2:40) over the Hokies' Cameron Hurd and gave the Mountaineers their first lead in the match, 10-8. The nationally-ranked Hokies were unable to regain the lead until four bouts later.

On Monday, Powell picked up the Black and Gold's fastest pin, defeating GWU's Alex Medved in 1:53 as the Mountaineers routed the Runnin' Bulldogs, 41-2.

Powell has earned pins in each of his last three duals and, including tournaments, also has a winning streak of three-straight pins. He currently leads the team with a career-high seven pins this year.
