LEXINGTON, Va. - With his team down 15-17 heading into the final bout of the night, VMI sophomore Andrew Embree claimed an 8-3 decision in the heavyweight division to help the Keydets claim their first dual match victory of the 2011-12 season, an 18-17 triumph over Franklin & Marshall.

After giving up six points to start the night, due to a forfeit at 125 pounds, the Keydets (1-0) rattled off four-straight victories by decision in the upper weights to draw within two of the Diplomats (0-6). Embree's 8-3 victory, his fourth of the season, came over Alex Henry.

"It's always great to win," said VMI head coach John "Rocky" Trudgeon, who is now in his 27th season at the helm of the program. "It's a good thing we won six matches of the 10, obviously it puts us in a hole giving up six points to start the night at 125."

In the middle weights, VMI picked up 12 total points in four matches, three of which came by three points or less. Michael Burnett got the run going at 157 pounds, edging Eric Norgard 7-6. Carry Joseph recorded the Keydets' largest margin of victory, taking a 7-3 win at 165 pounds over Adam Schroeder.

The run continued for VMI at 174 pounds as Matthew Brock tallied his 11th win of the season and third in a row, dating back to the Keystone Classic on Nov. 20, as he knocked off Matt Fullowan 3-2. The three-straight victories tie a season-high for the VMI senior, who is now just seven wins shy of tying his career-best 18-single season wins.

VMI's Conor Black tallied the fourth win during the streak, edging out Matt Latessa 8-6 to give the Keydets their first lead of the evening, 15-13. Black's decision brought the 500-plus people in attendance at The Thunderdome to their feet.

But the Keydet advantage was short lived as Diplomat Colin Ely tallied a 10-1 major decision, putting Franklin & Marshall back on top 17-15, opening the gates for Embree's match-clinching victory in the final bout of the evening.

"Embree hasn't had many opportunities, he was behind Josh Wine last year and didn't get a whole lot of matches in, but he's a good wrestler, scholastically a good wrestler and he's up a weight at heavyweight and we feel like he's going to have a good year," said Trudgeon.

After VMI gave up six points at 125 pounds, the Keydets got their first win of the night at 133 pounds as Ryan Goodsell pulled out a 6-3 decision over Robert Ruiz to cut the Diplomat lead in half, 6-3.

The Keydets are idle until next Friday when they host Southern Conference foe Campbell University at 7:30 in The Thunderdome at Cocke Hall.

Davidson's Mullen, Zarth Wrestle to Finals at Davidson Open

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior Matt Zarth and senior Tyler Mullen reached the finals of their respective weight classes to lead the Davidson wrestling team Saturday at the Davidson Open in Knobloch Tennis Center.

Zarth earned a pair of wins by fall at 125 pounds to advance to the semifinals, pinning The Citadel's Steven Cox in 3:35 and Anderson University's Keenan Simmons in 6:32. Zarth then advanced to the finals with a 9-7 decision over Virginia Tech's Matt Peters, but lost a 5-2 decision to Larone Madison.

Mullen (165) earned an 11-1 major decision over Hardy Hendren (VMI) and an 8-5 decision over John Lampe (Chattanooga-Unattached) to reach the semifinals. A 5-2 decisionover Kenneth Radford (The Citadel-Unattached) placed him in the finals, butMike Williams (UNC Pembroke) defeated him 8-1 for the bracket title.

Sophomore Scott Patrick placed third at 184 pounds. He reached the semis with a 5-3 decision over Josh Esparaza (Campbell-Unattached) and a medical forfeit. Shiheem Bryant of UNC Pembroke defeated him 3-2, but Patrick rallied with a 7-1 decision over Jared Holiday (Newberry-Unattached).

Freshman Ben Hartshorn reached the semifinals with a pair of decisions over Michael Akins (Chattanooga-Unattached) Sterling Perry (St. Andrew's), respectively, but was relegated to the consolation bracket with a close 9-7 loss to Duke's Chris Mullen. He lost his final bout by technical fall to Tyler Puckett (Appalachian State-Unattached).

Freshman Kevin Birmingham placed fourth at 149 pounds. He opened the day with a technical fall win over Campbell's Thomas LeBarre in 4:38, but was relegated to the wrestleback bracket with a 9-3 loss to Russell Benner (Appalachian State). Birmingham pinned Kody Getkin (St. Andrew's), but was pinned himself by Kristoff Thomas in the third-place bout.

Freshman Ed Isola went 2-2 at 197 pounds. Sophomore CT Talevi pinned St. Andrew's Caleb Mitcler in 3:24 at 157 pounds. Junior Chris Cirenza earned a major decision at 165 pounds. Freshman Anthony Eliascompeted at 133 pounds and went 1-2. Freshman Dan Hagemann (149) and junior Ike Crews (184) also competed for Davidson.

Davidson will next host Ohio Northern Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.

 

GWU's Reilly and Goods Lead Runnin' Bulldog Grapplers at 2011 Davidson Open

Davidson, N.C. - Gardner-Webb freshman Scott Reilly and newcomer Matt Goods each posted three wins apiece in their respective weight classes to lead the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers at the 2011 Davidson Open on Saturday afternoon in Davidson, N.C.

Reilly bounced back from a first round loss to Trey Adamson of Duke 10-4, to win three straight bouts at 174-pounds in the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Reilly defeated Kendall Hemmings of The Citadel 8-5, earned a 10-3 decision over Jacob Fahlfeder of Limestone and then recorded a fall at 2:34 over Chris Sloat of Belmont Abbey to advance to the quarterfinals.

There Reilly's winning streak ended at three, as Levi Clemmons of Chattanooga edge the GWU freshman for the 5-3 win, ending his day at 3-2 overall.

Seeing his first action of the season, Goods, who is a defensive lineman on the football team, competed at 285-pounds, and like Reilly, suffered a first round loss only to win three straight in the consolation bracket.

After a 12-7 loss to Eric Badertscher of Limestone in the first round to drop into the consolation bracket, Goods went on to record back-to-back pins over Daniel lovino-Ortiz of St. Andrews at 1:20 and over Jake Wright of Liberty at 1:38. In his fourth match of the day, Goods earned a 7-2 decision over Joshua Davis of N.C. State before suffering a 12-4 major decision loss to Robert Wade of Newberry to finish his day at 3-2 overall.

Senior Blake Salyer and freshman Josh Burns each posted one win on the day, as at 184-pounds Salyer defeated Jack Neblett of Liberty by way of a pin at 1:53, while at 157-pounds Burns recorded a 9-3 decision over Davis Bagwell of Newberry.

Gardner-Webb freshmen Ray Farnsworth and Matt Kowalski also competed on Saturday, as each went 0-2 on the day.

Gardner-Webb (1-1, 0-1 SoCon) will host its first-ever Southern Conference match on Monday night, as the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome the Mountaineers of Appalachian State to town for a Southern Conference showdown at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.

 

Luvsandorj Places Fourth To Highlight Bulldogs at Nittany Lion Open

University Park, Pa. - No. 12 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj posted a fourth-place finish with a 4-2 record to highlight The Citadel Wrestling team in action at the 2011 Nittany Lion Open. 11 Bulldogs competed in the all-day event, which featured 475 grapplers from around the country.

The Bulldogs return to action with their 2011-12 home opener, a dual meet against North Carolina State on Dec. 17 at 2:00 p.m.
