Greenville, S.C. - Furman men's soccer coach Doug Allison has been named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) South Region Coach-of-the-Year, it was announced on Saturday afternoon.
Allison, in his 17th year at the helm of the Paladin program, led a Furman squad that featured just two senior starters to a 14-4-4 record, top 25 national ranking and NCAA Tournament berth. The Paladins finished second in the Southern Conference with a 4-1-2 league record and climbed as high as No. 16 nationally before falling at nationally-ranked Charlotte in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by your peers," said Allison. "The players deserve credit because they do the work and I have an outstanding staff in Dan Popik, Charlie Arndt and Grant Allard."
Allison, who previously earned NSCAA Region Coach-of-the-Year honors in 1999, has posted a 224-98-32 record at Furman and ranks among the top 15 winningest active coaches in NCAA Division I men's soccer. He has earned SoCon coach-of-the-year six times and been named Furman coach-of-the-year three times.
Twenty-four men's soccer coaches at NCAA institutions have been recognized by their peers with the announcement of the 2011 NSCAA/Mondo Regional Coaches of the Year. These coaches will be joined by those coaches whose teams advanced to the NCAA semifinals on the ballot for NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year in their respective divisions.
Recipients of the national award will be announced at the annual Awards Banquet, to be held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at the Kansas City Convention Center in conjunction with the 2012 NSCAA Convention.
