Gmerek Scores Twice in 4-2 Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. - College of Charleston scored three times before half and withstood a strong Georgia Southern challenge after intermission to earn a 4-2 victory in the second semifinal of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The third-seeded Cougars recorded their 13th win of the season, setting a new program record. College of Charleston will face the top-seeded Samford Bulldogs, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET with the match broadcast on ESPN3.

At the 14:58 mark of the first half, the Cougars' Maryam Buazza headed a throw-in to forward Alli Brashear who scored the game's first goal.

Francesca Kentimenos scored the Cougars second goal off an assist from McCallie Jones. That was Kentimenos' fifth goal of the season. Five minutes later, Hannah Gmerek recorded her sixth goal of the season to stake the Cougars to a 3-0 advantage in the 42nd minute.

Georgia Southern continued to fight despite the three-goal deficit in the second half when Paige Grant's free kick from 40 yards out went over College of Charleston goalkeeper Cricket Wise to put the Eagles on the board at the 57:01 mark.

Courtney Collins put the ball past Wise just a minute later, assisted by Sara Oland, to bring the score within one goal.

However, that was not enough for the Eagles as Gmerek scored her second goal of the match from 28 yards out in the 66th minute, giving the Cougars a two-goal lead, and ultimately the win.

Georgia Southern (7-11-2) goalkeeper Katie Merson tallied eight saves, six of them being in the first half. Wise had two saves.
