SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon junior forward Chris Thomas has been chosen as the Southern Conference men's soccer player of the week for all matches on November 1, the final day of the regular season.
Thomas netted back-to-back second half goals as the Elon Phoenix and Duke Blue Devils played to a 2-2 draw in Durham on Tuesday.
Earning an early corner kick in the second half, the Phoenix batted the ball around in the box before Nick Millington crossed the ball in front of the goalmouth and found Thomas on the right post. Thomas headed in the equalizer in the 47th minute, his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Minutes later, the Phoenix struck again. Senior midfielder James Carroll sent a long pass forward to Thomas who was doubled up by Duke two defenders. Thomas pulled a great move to separate himself from the Blue Devils and send a perfect strike past diving goalie James Belshaw to put Elon on top, 2-1, in the 50th minute.
